The practice is illegal in most of Europe, the UK, Australia, and China.
uses IVF techniques to select only male fetuses to implant.
Between 2 and 5 couples a month come to [the doctor] for the treatment, most are ethnic Chinese.
It costs around 9,000 dollars but it's still cheaper and legal in Thailand.
God send for the traditional Chinese people.
In the future the same 'Designer Baby' concept would probably incorporate genetic diseases, physical qualities (eye color), and etc.
How do you guys feel about this method of choosing your baby?

I don't like it. It kills the surprise and it can be a liiiiiiiittle sexist.
Though there are couples that never get a boy and keep on trying, yet keep getting girls.
Has its pros and cons, but it makes me ask, why bother?
Good science though.

As if the gender problem in China wasn't bad enough already ;-;
Well, at least it's ILLEGAL in China.
But maybe this could be put to better usage later on, or something.
As Phunkie said, interesting science.

They want Males to take care of them in their old age and their is the general bias against having girls. This however is kind dumb because when they grow old where will the girls be? No girls, no wives, equals angry men :3

Apparently outside of the areas with traditional views on gender roles/value, most gender selected babies are female.
I never hear my girl friends say they want a son, they either say they want both or only daughters.

Hmmmm... Since we ARE 2010, I wonder if those values will effect this.
Yeah it will, but probably not as much.

In China, I've heard that people leave their babies on the streets if she was a girl :T_T:

Gonna be a bit strange to tell the kid he was created in a lab when he grows up....

It's not like they made him out of chemicals and plant matter.
IVF just means he was not fertilized in the womb.
Also @ all the China comments.
My dad who's from rural China says that does happen sometimes.
If you ever want to adopt a daughter, there's a ton in China.

I prefer a daughter but I know most of Asia has a traditional sense of wanting men being born.
Especially in the older generation of people. Sometimes entire families fall apart because females are born. Its the wife's fault, according to the grandparents.

In the more developed areas though, especially cities, more and more people are preferring daughters. Still doesn't do much against the stereotype, since so much of China's population live in rural areas.
