Cynics

  How do you guys feel people are tend to be cynical about life a lot? And I'm not referring to our very own Cynic, but just others in general. (Hi, Cynic!!)
  
  
  People who are cynical about love:
  
  -Who comes up with slly terms for different stages to a relationship: "honeymoon phase," "power struggle," "dead zone," "true partnership," etc. (I just Google'd the last three btw.) Who live life by "timing" how a relationship should be, and if it doesn't happen this way, it means that the relationship isn't to last. Things like you should have sex after 3 months or don't say I love you too quick.
  
  -Phrases like, "once a cheater, always a cheater," or "if he hits you once, he'll hit you again."
  
  People who are cynical about work or jobs:
  
  -Who say that you'll never find a job that makes you happy.
  
  People who are cynical about education:
  
  -Who criticize you for getting a degree in something you like, instead of something that can produce you more money. For example, writing over business, or musical theater over physics.
  
  People who are cynical about religion:
  
  -Who criticize others for believing in a God.
  
  -Who accuse religion for being the cause of all the evil things other believers have done throughout history.
  
  People are cynical about life in general:
  
  -Who ask things like, "What's the point to life?"
  
  -Who manage to see the possibility of good in life, but always uphold those negative possibilities.
  
  
  
  How do I feel about those kind of people?
  
  I stay faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar away from them.
  
  It's so easy to fall into someone's negative mood. I have nothing against anyone, period. Whether you believe in romantic love or not, whether you believe in God or not, whether you wanna major in French literature or not, whether you're sticking out to find a job that you like or not.
  
  Just don't bring the whole world with you. That's how I feel about people who are cynical.
  
  
  Brought this up because I was Googling stuff about love. :)
  
  Love really makes me happy. Was reading stories of people who have been together for years and still feel butterflies. That's wonderful. But the typical cynic would say something like, "just wait till the honeymoon phase is over."

  Depends on the type of cynic, to be honest. My name was actually meant to be sarcastic at first (I'm a true-blue realist; I don't like pessimists or people who simply whine and are overly negative about every little thing. Same goes for blind optimism), but I do actually agree with a few of the realistic aspects of it, but my own supposedly 'cynical' beliefs stem from the old definition, not the modern one. The modern definition of cynicism is basically just pessimism hiding under a different name.
  
  I have found myself agreeing with some modern cynics about certain things, though they were all pretty old-school otherwise, so I'm not too sure if that counts. lol. To me, it isn't about pessimism or optimism (or whatever else you want to call it), it's about what the situation calls for.
  
  For example: If you're in a shitty situation.. say, you're in a car wreck and you have only a 5% chance to live, then yes, it's perfectly natural to say "oh god I'm going to die". However, the same applies in reverse; if you have only a 5% chance of dying, then it's right to say "oh praise the lawd I'm going to live!"
  
  ..So basically, I hate both extremes. I absolutely despise needless negativity, yet I also hate those who are blindly and needlessly optimistic. To me, they're the same thing; stuck in some delusional land where reality and facts apparently don't exist, refusing to accept the truth of the situation, whether it's good or bad.
  
  Cynics get a lot of negative rep, but honestly, I can't blame people for assuming the worst in most of them because most of them are just glorified pessimists. To them, everything is bad, the glass is always half empty, life always sucks, blah blah blah.. and while I fully support people accepting the gravity of certain situations, if you can't learn to look positively towards life, especially when you encounter many positive aspects of it, then you need a serious reality check. But of course, the same applies in reverse. Just to a lesser degree, I suppose.

  I guess I stay far away from the way you think then. But I tend to be nice to every single kind of person. We just don't see eye-to-eye on many things. Wish we did.

  I ain't give no fucks if people are cynical or not, I'm not going to hate/"avoid" a certain group of (non-violent) people because their outlook on life is different than mines.
  
  I don't dislike religious people because I don't follow their beliefs, nor do I dislike druggies because I don't want to get involved with in that lifestyle. However, what I do dislike is people shoving their ideas down my throats when I already told them no.
  
  There are religious people who know not everyone is into that sorta thing, there are also druggies who realize the same, and I'm pretty sure cynics are the same.

  You're so right! It's good to maintain a good open-mindedness.
  
  However, sometimes being around negative people too much can tend to bring you down.

  I don't agree on the naive part, but I surely didn't mean to offend, if I did.
  
  But we've all been around a really negative, cynical person before and gotten really bad vibes afterwards. It's never too healthy to be extremely to the right or to the left. I try not to be too unrealistically optimistic, as well. I'm just a happy guy.
  
  There's people who you can teach to be realistic and there's people who you can't. People aren't teachable aren't really worth wasting time on. It's like trying to teach the Westboro Baptist Church to love people, instead of preaching hate.
  
  I hope you understand where I'm coming from.

  Aye.. I didn't even read that bit. It's very, very rare to find somebody who really only hit their partner (or friend/family member/whatever) by accident and as a one time thing. And no, things like "I was drunk" or "I snapped" are not valid excuses. Literally 99% of those people are just abusive assholes trying to keep up their nice guy/girl persona by apologizing or claiming it wasn't their fault.
  
  So yes, 'they hit you once, they will do it again' is true almost every single time.
