EarthBound Finally Headed to Virtual Console
It’s really happening. This is not a dream.
During Nintendo Direct this morning, Nintendo announced that EarthBound will be headed to Wii U Virtual Console in the West this year.
EarthBound follows the story of Ness and his friends Paula, Jeff and Poo as they attempt to save the world from the evil Giygas. Originally released on Super Nintendo in 1995, fans have been expecting a re-release for years but one has never materialized in the West despite a version hitting Game Boy Advance in Japan in 2003.

EarthBound was released on Virtual Console in Japan earlier this year following a tease about republication from creator Shigesato Itoi in December.
A specific release date for EarthBound’s virtual console debut hasn’t been announced just yet, but look out for more details in the months to come.

It was a pretty average RPG, I don't see why it became so popular.

This and Chrono Trigger.
Both games bored me so I stopped playing them.
Apparently people love dull RPGs

SMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASH
Because of the nostalgia factor and simply because it's easier to enjoy simple games as a child.

wow you guys are no fun
chrono trigger is great because goddamn there are 12 different endings (+ a new one in the DS version) and the storyline is interesting (also the music is fabulous)
earthbound is so delightfully kooky and original

Earthbound is popular because while it seems simple to a child once you acquire some basic analysis skills you can catch things that you never did before, but some people never gain the ability to look past the face value of things so their loss.
It's also quirky and groovy as hell.
...Now if they would just give us Mother 3 we'd be set.

go go translated ROM! I started playing and I quite like it so far.
Also I didn't play EarthBound until last year so it's a lot funnier.

Are you kidding me? You're saying the story is interesting?.
Seriously the game might have some amazing parts like magus' caslte and hearing about Lavos for the first time, but rather the that the story is pretty damn dull.

Except no one here is saying "OH IT MUST BE FOR KIDS IT SUCKS".
It's a dull RPG it doesn't matter if it's for kids or not.

Good for you bro, you think everything is shit
I think both these games are fabulous and you telling us they suck twice is just obnoxious and unnecessary

EarthBound (Mother 2) is a pretty groovy jRPG in the Mother series that came out in the U.S. in 1995. We never got the original Mother for NES, or Mother 3 for the GBA (all of which involve different characters, but presumably the same universe). EarthBound never made it over to Europe because it bombed in sales (but NoA went all out in their advertising).
Virtual Console is a Wii channel where you can buy and play classic video games that were on the NES and SNES. It's like emulation (on a higher gen device), except legal since you're paying for it.
It came out March 20th in Japan, and will come out later this year in NA and EU (for the latter, the first time ever).

Oh yeah right, there's that little guy in Super Smash Bros Brawl!
-
Claudia wrote on 2013-04-17 20:14
Yeah, Lucas (protagonist of Mother 3) is in Brawl, and so is Ness (protagonist of EarthBound)!
Ness was also in Melee and the original. There's a map of Onett in Melee, too.
Must be confusing to see characters in a video game that you never actually knew existed...

Nope. It just told me that there are games I don't know, but of course I already knew that~

Fair enough. ~
If you're not opposed to emulation, you should play the games. They're pretty amusing and a little nonsensical but they try to portray [S]America[/S] Eagleland like it was created by someone who learned about it from books.
