I agree with Aubog. I'm going to make my opinion simple: I'd like to see something that relates to mabinogi. Whether it be talent or total based.
I'm not saying I dislike rep, I'm not saying I like it. It's already there. Also, post counts are already there. Let's have something new.
Yeah I guess total and talent are there too, but both are based on honesty and can just be made up. You can't make up your rep and post count, so it would be nice to see something symbolic of your actual hard work in the game that the forums are based on.
It wouldn't be hard to provide proof of your total or talent, show it in a picture or to a mod ingame (not hard to make your journal public so people can see it up to 10k total ,and anyone past that really has no reason to lie anyway).

There's too many problems with both methods.
In-game based stuff: who the hell wants to spend time to verify that.
Forum-based stuff: this thread's discussion shows why that isn't going to go down too well.
At the moment the only method I see of doing it is unverified in-game stuff, meaning anyone can have grandmaster whatever they want, so I may as well only create the option for grandmaster...

ITT mabi elites are the only ones arguing against over reputation
I mean I guess post count wouldn't be a bad idea because that would shut everyone up and make most people happy

Rep is a horrible system. I very very rarely get repped for helping someone but people in bean rua give out rep like candy just for making random posts. Rep should be for people who deserve it and have done something that deserves it like helping someone, making informative posts, etc. I dont understand what this has to do with mabi elites have to do with this when the top repped people on the forum dont play mabi anymore or are low-mid leveled.

I think y'all missed my point where being a nice person and helping people by itself won't get you a ton of rep
it sucks that some people here have lower rep than they should, but that's just how it goes
and if you're implying that any of us "low-leveled" high rep people are inferior then you can go fuck yourself because I really couldn't give two shits about anyone's total level, because that's obviously how we should make a judgement on someone's character or general worth in a community!
again, the reason why nation is cool is because total level doesn't really matter and people don't make a big deal out of it. i'd rather we kept it that way.

Personally, as someone with a high amount of rep, received from both being helpful and being [s]a smartass[/s] funny, we should just get rid of the rep system completely, because I lost count of how many times the topic of rep has come up in any situation, just for the people who have little rep/never leave a certain section of a website complain about people who never go into that section of the website have more rep than them, and then people that have high rep/ never visit said website turn around and argue about why the rep system shouldn't be changed, and blah blah blah.
The way I see it, the system just causes more problems than it solves. I doubt a new person to this site to ask one or two questions than vanish forever will care too much if the people answering their questions only have 3 bars of rep and give them a helpful answer, or actually listen to the person with 11 bars of rep give a smartass answer. So really, the rep system is nothing but just letting people grow their epeen and stroke it occasionally. It's been that way ever since this community started to use dereps as ways to attack other members and not get in trouble.
And trust me, the other side doesn't look all that good either. The people that are complaining about this talent icon system being based on rep, and instead should be based on in game accomplishments are also just looking for ways for them to grow and stroke their epeens over other members of the forums who aren't quite as skilled as these people, and are making sure everyone knows how awesome they are. And of course, the people of this site that doesn't play Mabi, either never, or are retired, will now have this icon next to their names that they know nothing, or care nothing about. Why? Because the "elite" want this to show off. And of course, the said people that will lie about their in game accomplishments to undermine the people that actually earned it, or those that as I said, don't give a damn about this stuff, and never update their information, so now they are lesser than what they actually are, either because they're modest, or they're too lazy to bother updating.
So really, there are only two options for this thing:
1: Let people choose what talent they are, as they currently are in game (and come up with some other stuff for the people that don't play Mabi at all, can't forget those guys), so they have that icon somewhere on their sidebar, and then have the frame change based on post count, since that's something people can't fake, and a higher post count usually points to people who are active throughout the forum and not just in Bean Rua, where you don't get an official post count for posting there, thus meaning that the more helpful people will generally have better frames for their icons (though it's not flawless, because there are people that post in threads that, while on topic, are really nothing more than posting for the +1), so people can recognize the helpful from the not so helpful. As I said, it's not perfect, but it's certainly more fair than basing it on reputation.
2: Have this talent system be based not on Mabi, but the forum themselves. Have a bunch of different things to represent talents, like posting, reputation, guides, helpfulness, etc., and for each thing, set a bench mark for each talent, so that after reaching said benchmark, your rank in that talent would go up. So for example, after reaching 750 posts, you'll go up from the bronze tier to the silver tier in posting, and then at 2000, you'll raise to gold tier (obviously, we can have more than 4 tiers). Or for helpfulness, posting good answers for people looking for help, either in the Questions and Help section, or even responding to people requesting help in game through the Marketplace, or helping someone get through a hell-like week that they posted about, will give you more points toward that goal, which is now great, since people will actually care for other people and help out, not so much as to show how much knowledge they have, but also going out of their way to help people they don't know. It could be like every 10 different people you help will have you go up a rank.
Sure, it's not flawless, since it'll require a lot of work for the staff to monitor and/or actually come up with a system to automatically take care of all of this, as well as people can take advantage of things, for example on helpfulness, Splat asks a question in his thread that's common knowledge to everyone that has played the game for more than a week, and 50 people respond, all saying the same thing just to increase their rank in said talent. But in the end, it should make everyone on this site nicer and better to one another, and since this thing involves everyone, not just those that play Mabi, it just fits better for a fansite that caters to more than just Mabi, even if 90% of the community doesn't venture outside of the Mabi section.
Personally I don't care if they add in another bar on our user profiles. I stated the flaws with it earlier, though I'm not against it or for it. I don't care for rep or for displaying character info to be honest. People judge you too much based on things like that and not based on the person you actually are. I know I'm not the most helpful person on these forums and I don't want people to think my opinion is any less or more valuable because of my character either. And as for peoples total levels, I don't honestly care who is stronger than who either. Whether or not I'm strong or someone else is is completely irrelevant to a forum (unless its a topic about experience that only a high level person could have or something).
To be honest, after all this debate and whatnot, it seems like the idea of another thing being added would be too troublesome for Osay. Especially considering he just said he was going to work on a bunch of other things for the forums.
Also to anyone saying "oh those with rep are just saying this because ___" or "oh those with high levels are on this side because ____": it should be pretty obvious most people are going to want something that effects them. Keep in mind, I don't display my character level or info anymore and I don't care about rep at all so really neither effects me.
I typed all that and realized it's just not that important lol I don't have an opinion enough on either side I guess. Screw all these extra icons and things, I just want an eevee pet damnit.

Because bean rua spits out rep like no one's business while the mabi section barely doles out any.
Because people only rep when things are funny as i proved than actually helping out and giving advice.
Doesn't help that the people with higher rep has more power over the system.
Rep should be gone, eradicated from the system.
Only reason why total level was brought into this discussion was because rep was brought into this discussion, and the people who don't have higher levels are complaining and the people who have lower rep are complaining.
See the problem?

Yes. Everyone's complaining.
Why can't we just have fun with it instead of making it more important than it is?

Honestly, it doesn't have to be rep/post count based, it can be anything, or just Grandmaster/gold or maybe even Green(Mabination).
I would just like to see the icons next to our names.
