You don't give people enough credit. We are aware of the outlying concerns. Just read the posts.
About your assessment of the kid. I know where you are coming from. I remember someone told a story about relative trying to fight back during a smuggling and end up in vegetated state.
The thing is, this kid isn't doing this for himself, it was the heat of the moment, he had to act or the other guy might be stabbed, we don't know for sure what is the case, but we do know the kid with the knife was tackled, so chances are the situation was dire (you don't tackle people unless you need to stop them fast). That's why what he does is heroic, because he did it for someone else.
There's a fine line between heroism and stupidity, just because he did it successfully doesn't meant it wasnt stupid.
Just because it was a selfless act, doesn't mean it wasn't STUPID.
You do not reward stupid acts, it's like me looking for muggers and tackling them to the ground.
That is a stupid act regardless of being successful or not.
Because you will get more people HURT than anything, i wish i had more info on this story so i could draw a psychological conclusion but unfortunately we do not get a damn thing about what instigated the fight.
REGARDLESS.
I will put it into easy perspective, age 13. classmates. at that age is middle school time.
Here. Let me be a big dick here and say this. How do you know the person who pulled out the knife wasn't being bullied by the other student, and today was the day he finally said he had enough and stood up to the bully by pulling out a knife and saying LEAVE ME ALONE?
Ya don't.
THE MEDIA BLOWS, THEY DO NOT SHARE A FUCKING THING.

Screaming is for pussies. This kid ACTED. Outlying concerns be damned.
Yes, wishing to not get hurt or injured is bad.
"he did it out of no concern for his own well being" stupid.
"he did it for another human being" Not stupid.
Stupid action + not stupid intention = ???

Yeah, being simple minded about this isn't good. :P
Both sides here are right in their own ways--it just so happens that they clash in this case, which is unfortunate.
You summed it up right here.
Lack of information to draw a decisive conclusion.
Scattered bits of possible misinformation paint the picture as "heroic".
Media is bullshit and everyone buys into it without full knowledge of the story and background
I wonder if i am the only one seeing it from a mechanical point of view and noticing that the story is incomplete, therefore inappropriate to form a conclusion around it.
