And since people who participate in internet polls, makes preorders, and watches E3 are actually only a very minor part of their customer group, none of it really even matters to them. They'll still get 90% of their sales off of people who just want to play CoD and Halo. It doesn't even matter that the PS4 will get CoD.
The 360 established itself as an iconic brand for all pseudo hardcore gamers and they'll probably buy the Xbox One without knowing anything about it.
You're thinking too much from a logical standpoint. People (the mainstream consumer) are illogical by nature and move uninformed. They'll probably make a lot of money with stunts like these.
