Basic (Budget) Computer Build?

  So my old desktop computer is dying, and I'll need to get a new one soon.
  
  Now what I'm looking for isn't a gaming PC, this laptop I'm using runs games pretty well.
  
  I need a cheap desktop computer I can use for school/work/stuff that can also run Mabinogi on highest settings.
  
  Not too much to ask for.
  
  It would be less trouble to order a pre-built one, though I do have enough tech skill to assemble one if individual parts are cheaper.

  you want to run mabinogi on the highest settings possible? you need a gaming PC, or at least a decent video card, at least to handle 200 people gathering in one place and not lag; you need a type of common graphics card with 1GB of memory. Highest settings for mabi include anti-aliasing in the graphics card control panel.

  frankly, gfx cards are now reducing in price now so you're in luck
  any desktop would work, buy a new video gfx card, and maybe some RAM and you're set

  that aaaand most parts arent basic and cost a **** load cuz they assume anyone going through the time to assemble a comp instead of buying one wants a high end compooter, so basic parts are nonprofitable

  well actually with a basic pc already bought, all he has to pay for are RAM and vid card.
  which combined is anywhere from 100-200 dollars depending on how much of a performance hoar you are.

  If your laptop runs Mabi fine, why do you want your school/work computer to be able to run it on highest settings?
  
  If you're really going for budget, as Byte said, the cheapest Netbook and Desktop run at under $300. The Desktop is cool because it's an 8" cube as opposed to a tower.
  
  If you're set about gaming on it, as Knight said, it's probably cheaper to just buy something with a good processor and then stick in a graphics card and additional RAM as needed. 1GB graphics card might be overkill, I'm not sure what everybody else has but I can run it fine on 128MB integrated in populated areas (albeit not near lagless). I'd assume 512MB would be the preferred amount. For RAM, I'm guessing 2GB is enough unless you want to multi-task with Mabi on, then go for 3-4GB.

  This is the exact same plan as I made for Yoshi, because it works for what you need it for. Find a case of your choice on newegg.com, a mouse, a monitor, speakers, and a keyboard of your choice. When it all comes down to it, those are all for your preference.
  
  You'll want a case that is mid or full tower and is aesthetically pleasing, a mouse that is comfortable in your hand, a keyboard that is standard or ergonomic, and speakers that won't make you go deaf. If speakers aren't your thing, go for a headset.

  I'm going to tell you this right now. I currently own a laptop with 1GB ram and an integrated card that can get up to 384MB. IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO RUN ANYTHING ON EVEN THE LOWEST POSSIBLE SETTINGS.
  
  1GB graphics should be the bare minimum, and for the price, you really can't compete. You're going to want 4GB of RAM for any use you can come up with. And cut the storebought crap right now, because storebought computers are full of bloatware, have terrible hardware, and are overpriced.

  Don't just look at the ram when looking at video cards. You just need higher video RAM if your playing at higher resolutions (Think 1980x1080+). Look at what series of card its from first. And yes, prebuilt computers like HP and Dells are overpriced and aren't worth your time if your willing to build your own.
  
  First, we need to know how much your willing to pay for this silentselene. Mabinogi isn't that high end of a game and shouldn't need over $600 if that's all your going to play.
  
  I'm going to make some suggestions to your build though Halfslashed.
  
  Motherboard : That board seems too high end and not worth it unless you really want to future proof. Something like this GIGABYTE would be fine if your going the i5 route.
  
  Processor : If you want to go for Intel, get the i5 760, the new version of the 750 . It would be cheaper to go with AMD but I'm not too experienced with those builds.
  
  CPU Cooling : As long as he has a good case with good airflow, there's no need to replace the stock cooler that comes with the CPU unless your going to overclock.
  
  PSU : I never even heard of that brand before. It's recommended to go with a good brand for your PSU because if that fails, it can take other parts out with it. Something you don't want to go cheap on.
  
  Anyways, you might wanna check out this thread out for an idea of your budget and what you can get. Note that most of these are desgined for highend gaming and the graphics card is usually overpowered for your needs.

  You can easily get rid of spamware in a couple of minutes by running throught Add/Remove Programs (or reinstalling the OS).
  As for NOTBEINGABLETORUNANYTHINGONLOWESTSETTINGS, I believe that's either an exaggeration or your personal preference to have everything run absolutely perfectly. Although, 1GB is obviously not enough if you're using an integrated graphics card (I did mention a 512MB non-integrated along with 2-4GB), since then you're only leaving yourself with like 600MB to run the game, while still bottlenecking the graphics.
  
  Storebought computers (including Dells) may be overpriced, but that's because you're paying for convenience. It's a lot of trouble to order parts from this guy and that guy, then put it all together. It's the same thing as going to a fast food place, no way in hell is fast food worth the prices they charge, but people buy it because it saves them loads of time and effort. Whether or not it's worth it is up to the individual, how much free time they have, and how much they care about the end product. Personally, I considered having a friend help me build one, but I only see that as worth it if you plan on unloading your bank account and making something really powerful.

  Just keep in mind that making your own is very easily cheaper, but you can't be lazy. Plus you have to have -some- knowledge of how things work.

  I read that. A dell would be the best choice for school, because they're cheap and "average" for the year. Or, just buy external hard drives.
  
  Though I strongly suggest a laptop > desktop for school. Due to the fact that you'd use a laptop more for college.
