Tanuki (狸 or タヌ) is the common Japanese name for the Japanese raccoon dog.
Close enough! I knew it looked like some sort of Raccoon.
Guess the manipulation of animals was farthest from the truth. Ability to make things change shape? No wonder why she's friends with Nue! Nue manipulates objects as well!
Btw, Easy was too easy. None of the spellcards were challenging at all. I'm going to go play Normal now.

While I really enjoy the overall designs of the new characters, I can't but help to laugh at how, for lack of a better word, stupid their abilities are (though not arguing how powerful their danmaku skills are). We first got Yuyuko, as we know, can instantly kill any mortal she so chooses (though we know she won't use her ability as a weapon), and was only really a first stage boss to do nothing more than direct the player towards the Myouren temple, so she toned her danmaku skills down tremendously.
Then we have Kyouko. Sure, her ability to reflect sound waves may not seem that powerful, but if you think about it, her abilities aren't really that much different than what Reisen can do, except only capable of using sound, where as Udonge can manipulate any sort of wave. So she is capable of causing some serious distortion against her opponent, as well as nullifying any sound based attacks against her, and the only way to fight her is to be completely silent.
Kogasa is a joke character, and a popular one at that, quite similar to Cirno. Her ability isn't really that useful, considering that she can't even use it that well, and even if she could, it does nothing more than create a distraction. She's also similar to Cirno in that while for the most part, she's one of the weaker Youkai in Gensoukyo, she does have moments where she is a force to be reckoned with.
And finally, rounding out the demo bosses, we have Yoshika. Her ability is the ability to eat anything and everything. So basically, her ability is the fusion of Flandre's ability (the ability to destroy anything and everything) and Yuyuko/Rumia's generally accepted behavior of being super gluttons. Naturally, this would be a joke, if not for the fact that Yoshika is a mother****ing Jiang Shi. She's undead, so killing her won't stop her from eating you, as well as having your attacks be completely useless since she can just eat them anyways (just like how Yukari can make your attacks be nothing more than a dream, making them useless. A load of bull****, but perfectly acceptable in Gensoukyo). Plus, having seen quite a few movies featuring Jiang Shi let's me know that they all know kung fu, so she can kick your ass with slightly less proficiency than Meiling. Yoshika can quite easily be one of the most powerful entities in Gensoukyo... if not for the fact that she's also one of, if not the dumbest character canonically in Gensoukyo and easily counterable, even if it's just throwing a piece of bread at Yoshika.
Then, we have the new girls. Seiga is a hermit, similar to Kasen and Tenshi, except not. For the most part, she's "immortal", though not blessed by Heaven like Kasen and Tenshi are. What that means, I have no clue. However, her ability is the ability to pass through walls... yeah, that's what her official powers in her profile are. So her abilities are something that Yukari and Koishi can do in essence (they don't technically pass through walls, but they both can make it appear that way), and what any ghost should be able to do. Seriously? I think this shows that ZUN's starting to run out of ideas. At the very least, he could have given her the ability to raise the dead (necromancy), since she is Yoshika's master. At least then, I think people can take her a little more seriously than her power to go through walls.
The stage 5 midboss, Tojiko [s]the tailed ghost chick that clearly wants to be Mima-sama and if I had art skills, I would match her up with Mima-sama where Mima-sama would be more sadistic than you can even imagine Yuuka being[/s]*cough*, has the power to summon thunder. I'm going to go ahead and assume that it means that she controls lightning and not the sound that lightning creates. Because if it is literally thunder, then I can just grab Kyouko, use her as my meat shield (like how Seiga does with Yoshika) and then only focus on dodging Tojiko's danmaku, since Kyouko will reflect any thunder that Tokijo uses against me. If it is indeed lightning, and only a mistranslation, then at least she has a real power [s]even if Iku is known for being able to use lightning as a weapon long before Tokijo came around[/s].
The actual boss for the 5th stage, Futo, has the power to use Feng Shui... the power to use Feng Shui, really? Her special ability that makes her unique to other characters in Gensoukyo is really nothing more than interior decorating? Sure, in the traditional sense of Feng Shui, she can set up her base or where ever she's staying at to give her more power while reducing the opponents abilities, which is more than enough in many cases, she can be a valuable ally, however, it's still nothing more than fancy interior decorating. If it weren't for the fact that Rinnosuke has no fighting powers that we know of (aside from the fanon ability to transform into Mannosuke), I'd probably have him join me for a fight rather than an interior decorator.
And finally, we get the big bad of this game, Miko, and her ability to listen to ten people at once... and it's not like it's a better/weaker version of Satori's ability (depending on how you view mind reading), her ability is that she can listen to ten conversations at once... sure, if she was a spy, then her ability would be useful, since she can slip into a group of several emissaries of various countries, and listen in on each group and know which each one is saying for future reference. How ever, I don't really see it as a useful ability.
Nue, the midboss of the Extra stage, has the power to conceal the true form of not only herself, but other things as well. Better espionage usage compared to Miko's, and a surprise factor a billion times over compared to Kogasa's, since Nue can actually strike fear into her opponents where as Kogasa can only surprise her victims. And a frightened opponent will either mean that they will either run away (you don't get hurt), they are paralyzed (you don't get hurt), or they are a bit shaky (reducing their attack's effectiveness, meaning little to no damage to you).
Mamizou [s]who I love instantly, a brunette meganekko with animal ears/tail, HNNNNNNNNNGGGGGG![/s], being a tanuki means she's a master of transformation, similar to Nue, though only for herself instead of everything. While enough to actually be effective at many things, isn't as great as Nue's. Of course, she's probably more capable of surprising people than Nue and Kogasa combined. Considering she's a tanuki, in the fan art out there for her already, when she's not a chibi, she has gigantic breasts to make up for a lack of a different part of anatomy (tanuki in mythology are depicted with ridiculously sized balls), and Mamizou is most likely going to be the one Touhou character to be turned into a futanari the most, so she can easily shock anyone that isn't used to futa's in a matter of seconds. I really don't see anything wrong with this character. [s]And let's not mention that she's the first new girl to actually have hentai on the internet, since I'm sure that people on danbooru have been lurking all over Pixiv for any and all Ten Desire images[/s]
Again, this is just a little rant on how ZUN's probably running out of gas for Touhou characters, as well as a way for me to vent over my lack of finding a download link for Ten Desires

How can you not find a download link for Ten Desires! One was posted right above! I got creamed on Normal mode. Didn't make it past stage 4 :fail3:
I'll try again later. I think I was too distracted
ZazieTheBeast wrote on 2011-08-14 05:09
the powers that the characters get are almost unimportant considering none will use them. Remilia, FLandre, Yuyuko, and Yukari all have instant win powers which they never use fully. Only characters who have used their powers are kaguya and mokou which just allows you to kill them repeatedly
Kingofrunes wrote on 2011-08-14 05:23
Well I just made it to the final boss on Normal. Was doing good and then I ****ed up and next thing I know I die with only 2 spellcards left :sigh:
So close! :cryno:

You write a rant slowly doing research while lurking danbooru/doujinstyle/jp/etc and see if you can instantly find a dependable link to the game.

Remember, Remilia's ability isn't fully explained. In Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, it said that there's a good probability that Remi's ability is one that she doesn't control consciously, which is a good reason as to why she lost to Reimu and Marisa during the Red Mist incident, because Remi's pride wouldn't let her lose if she was consciously able to change the destiny of the fight to be in her favor.
Flandre is similar, albeit she does have control over her ability. She herself doesn't really know how her power works, she just knows that she can crush the eye of something she wants and it explodes. And naturally, because of her unstable emotions which pretty much makes her the very definition of a yandere, she really doesn't have much control over herself when she wants to destroy something that made her upset. Reason why she didn't go ballistic against Reimu/Marisa during the Extra stage was because she was curious as to what danmaku was like, and since the heroines where more focused on dodging than just attacking Flan, they really didn't get her too upset to get her to the point of thinking of destroying them, as well as seeing them as friends after the match.
Yuyuko, as I said, doesn't want to use her powers as a weapon. Even though she seems childish and a ditz most of the time, she is one of the most serious and mature people in all of Gensoukyo when she needs to be. She knows that death isn't something that any one person should be able to control, and she in fact hates that power (which is why people speculate that she killed herself/was willing to be sacrificed to stop Saigyou Ayakashi). So I really don't see her using that power unless she desperately needed it, such as all of Gensoukyo is in danger and she is literally the only one that can stop the destruction of it, and the current Hakurei shrine maiden/Yukari aren't able to do so themselves for various reasons.
As for Yukari, she has a plan for pretty much everything she does, as well as most likely being at least 200 moves ahead of her opponent in every scenario. Outside of the spellcard rules system, it's pretty much impossible for Yukari to lose unless she so chooses to lose, in which case, there's a very important lesson behind it. In fact the only being in existence that can possibly do anything to Yukari is the Hakurei shrine maiden, and that will never come to that, because Yukari loves Gensoukyo too damn much to do anything that would make a Hakurei to come after her to exterminate her, since Yukari has never shown any hostility to humans/youkai (exception being Tenshi/Okuu, but again, that's only because they threatened destroying Gensoukyo, which is a big no-no when dealing with Yukari).
And of course, if you look at these characters that have instant-win abilities, and compare them to the characters from the same games they're from, you'll see that those that have the more powerful abilities are in fact the final/extra/Phantasm stage bosses, and those with the weaker abilities (exception being Rumia, though she's too dense to actually use her powers to her advantage, and the fan created character EX-Rumia was made to show the power that Rumia would have if she wasn't a complete idiot, and that power easily puts her on the same level, if not stronger than Yuuka, Mima, Eiki, etc) are at the earlier stages of the game. It really wasn't until this game that characters with weak/overall useless abilities are bosses of the end stages while those with relatively useful abilities are at the beginning (excluding Yuyuko, who really only fought with the heroines to make sure that they are capable of solving the incident, and went really easy on them, so her match really doesn't count).
That's just how I see it anyways.

I feel ya. Was untouched until Stage 5 myself then a second of recklessness caused me to lose a life needlessly and I couldn't recover my focus since. Really thought I can 1cc it then, since I was even impressing myself.

That's the thing with Touhou. One death shakes you up enough to make it very difficult to regain your focus sometimes which can spell disaster.

Hmm, I get the feeling ZUN has already a good idea of the setting for Touhou 14..
The extra stage boss talks a lot about the sea and how Reimu should Visit it soon...

Sea huh? Bring back Genjii?

Oho, I was playing this freeware game someone recommended to me called Last Scenario and I found something that made me think of Touhou.

It's probably just a coincidence but the name, the occupation and the "or else..." just made me think of Sakuya. xD

I played that game, it was a lot of fun, good story, but very tedious. I can't remember the name, something about venom.
