Currently watching Kurozuka, Anohana, and Mawaru Peguindrum.
Kurozuka is incredibly complicated, but quite awesome once you get to the end and everything's explained.
The manga has too much sex though.

Yeah very hard to be interested when you're so confused.
Almost done with Mawaru Penguindrum though, 2 more episodes!
It's sooo good.

because this opening is too great.
EDIT: audio was disabled in previous video (the actual opening) so I just put up the entire song.

If you are looking for old school animes that are great here are two I think still holds out great even today:
1. Slam Dunk, the big daddy of sports manga and anime, before slam dunk sports manga is taboo, nobody thought it was possible. This title broke through the preconception and went on becoming one of the greatest manga in history.

2. Slayers. This series is the classic japanese interpretation of western fantasy, frankly I love this series, it's still one of the all time favorite after all these years, I would rank this ahead of naruto and bleach any day of the week. The writing is hillarious, the actions are epic. My favourite of the series is probably Slayer Next. Lina Inverse, the protagonist is just great, she is smart, strong, yet unpretentious, she's not a so called "badass" because she is not cool, she just isn't, she loses her cool a lot, but when shit hits the fan, you can count on her to actually thought up a plan that would save the day.
Here is a classic scene of her kicking ass:

Those ones aren't even that old. I hate to sound preachy, but you're missing out on a lot of good stuff with that mentality. Especially Slayers since it practically defined a lot of the fantasy anime to come after it and popularized Light Novel adaptations. Not as much as Haruhi did for LNs later though.
Old != bad art, and there's a lot of HD remasters nowadays. I just watched a remaster for Lupin III recently, and despite being from 1971 it looked really crisp and awesome.

Yeah I know I'm gonna miss out on a lot but if I don't find it visually appealling it won't keep me interested. I plan on watching Monster after Anohana.

I just watched gundam 00. If you're the type of person who loves seeing idealism and realism clash, one who loves watching many philosophical ideas put into realization, one who questions the purpose of life, the limits of the human spirit/being, and just purely enjoys flashy awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping mecha battles then I highly recommend this series to you. I have to say that the plot was woven incredibly well and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There are many deus-ex-machina/give character god power moments but I never really cared. It doesn't matter who wins the fight or whos the invincible character/whos the strongest. What matters more is how the world in that anime changes in response, and reactions that occur due that sudden increase in power. But even with those give a character god power moments, its pretty balanced on both *sides* in terms of fighting strength.
Quick Plot Introduction: How does one bring about global peace without conflict or dictatorship? The plans and ideals of a long-dead scientist are finally being brought into realization by a group known as Celestial Being. An amazing part of this anime that I enjoyed was how they gave us the POV of the various situations by ALL the groups in the matter (the civilians, royalty government, manipulators, celestial being (main protagonist groups), ordinary folk who get caught up in the mess, rebels, etc.)
