Unless your CP gets to like well over 3000 like some people, I highly doubt that is a problem. Besides, if the CP gets "high", the person in question would probably have tons of levels/AP to do other stuff already. Doing it later can also mean having the resources to get like reforges (or wait for event) to do WM. (Or even WM training pots)
Sure, some people think that NPC reforges are just cheap, and easy to get, but if you are just starting out, everything seems expensive.
WM, while very useful, isn't the end of your character if you don't rank it right now, or never rank it.
Can't kill anything? Of course he can kill stuff at his level. Puppetry still do damage.
Windmill is the single most useful skill in the game, if you dont rank it while ur new u will have alot more difficulty clearing content and "enjoying" the game. To say that you dont need to rank windmill isnt something you want to put into a new player's head. Honestly its fine and all to do wat you want in this game, but that one skill is the single skill that you NEED to rank, its just that useful and needed. And why put urself through more trouble in later game with higher cp, or needing reforges, or WASTING (ya i said it, wasting gold because wm isnt THAT HARD TO RANK) gold on training pots to rank it? Just do it now, and have the most useful skill in ur arsenal finished and not have to worry about it later. It is not good to claim windmill isnt needed, because honestly it is.

It will barely hold its own advanced shadow missions without any stats to back it up. For the amount of AP spent into getting the skills to r1 he could be holding his own in hardmode if he chose warrior/archer.

Just find a monster (like a spider) that knocks you down to a wall or something. When you are falling down, load windmill. The next time the same monster tries to attack, it will function as a counterattack.
You do not have to rank Windmill if you don't enjoy it.
What is with all these people bashing Puppetry as a talent. Sure, it doesn't get like a 500 to 1000 max damage if you rank everything else, but it still provide the puppetry gameplay if you have like 100 max damage... as long as your puppetry skills are r1.
Not bashing, we're just saying it really isn't the beginner talent. I use puppets often myself.
Regardless of your "class", you're still gonna have to rank certain basic things... sadly puppetry doesn't fall under that category.
100 max is an exaggeration. With that damage, you won't even be useful in advanced missions. Nor would you have that damage with all r1 puppet skills.
Interestingly enough, my highest character screen max damage is achieved by my good bars, but that's only because I sort of have stats to back it up, and that's the case for many other players too (at least humans). If you don't have stats (which is the beginners' case), you're better off dual wielding focused beams for damage (or even HLC or D-Fang).

Didn't bother to read the previous pages. Of all the talents, puppetry and fighter racks up damage faster than any other skillset. However, puppetry plateaus after a certain point, and that's when you will need to rank str/dex skills. This is mabinogi, if you want to enjoy the game, do whatever you feel fit. If you are playing to be competitive, rank melee, then range, then str/dex giving life skills, then puppetry.

I doubt you're checking this thread any longer, Abrie but I do have advice to share.
Without question, whichever path you decide to on will ultimately reflect what you want to get out of the combat experience. If you like to party with other people, then puppet and fighter are great suggestions as Howlhurl suggested. Conversely if you prefer to play alone for the sake of convenience, then melee would be a sagacious choice. Not to say that you can't solo things with puppetry and fighter but in terms of early frustrations with the learning curve, maining melee would mitigate these acclimation pains.
If I were in your position, I would rank windmill, smash, and combat mastery then with these established basics, decide if melee gives you what you want out of combat where at this point you'd be free to transition to puppets. This also gives you the advantage of having smash to deal single target damage- often considered the major limitation of puppetry whose strength lie in AOE damage.
With this perspective in mind, I would not hesitate to try other things because being happy in this game is pretty important for long-term interest. Even if you "screw up" a character, you can always reinvest your resources into a new more focused character. A lot of people on this forum will consider that "time wasted" but the reality is that time spent playing any game is wasted unless you gain something from it (gaming skills translational to irl, happiness, money, etc)

A really good place for you would be the shadow mission in Tara called "their method" even in basic mode they should be boss level so it should make for painless training.

If you have high DEX and strength you should be fine but I don't always recomend puppetry as first skill Puppetry can be used for both long and short distances but if you have low power the chances are your marionette won't do much damage. For a example your marionettes will do about 70% at rank
6 but if you have have low damage like I said it wont do much damage...try learning a talent like warrior so you c an get stronger. Once you think you have good Dex and strength go and try puppetry again! Puppetry was also my first choice but I stopped for a while so I can learn ninja and warrior. Theres no need to hold back if you think you have reached your goal. Puppetry is incredibly hard to rank up after you make it past skilled puppeter. if you want to rank up faster pick puppetry as your main talent when you reborn or use pots that you can buy with NX or from events.
