Chapter 3: Wings of a God
I always hated cemeteries. Not because I was frightened of any ghosts or spirits that still dwelled around, but because I was always reminded me of all the people I had killed. Bad guys, good guys, it didn't matter; I had killed too many.
We entered the gates and made our way through the cemetery slowly. The night was still dark, despite it being a little past four in the morning. It was as if Palala, our Sun, also feared the events that were occurring that night. We could still see the fires burning in the Ciar mountains from here.
"Yuck," I said as I stepped into another grave.
"Virtue! You're disturbing the dead!" David yelled.
"They're dead already, does it really matter?" I responded. My face was serious. David's wasn't. I couldn't tell whether he was scared or not. He was playing his mandolin as we walked through these tombs. Cheerful music, that's what we need, I bet he thought.
Sin held on strongly to my arm. She didn't let go one bit. I didn't quite understand it.
"So what is it with you and ghosts?" I asked her.
She looked up and glared at me. "I've had horrible experiences with them. I hate them, I hate them, I hate them!" She let go of my arm and sank her face in her hands. She quickly held back on, however.
"Oh, did I hear that correctly, weapon? You want to tell us a story?" David added sarcastically.
She looked at him and ignored him. At least she illuminated the path in front of us. Somewhat, at least. I kept bumping into small gravestones.
We were nearing the exit of this ghastly place when suddenly, someone jumped out from behind a large tree.
"GHOST!!!" Sin screamed and flew away in the direction of the exit.
"Sin, wait!" I yelled back, but it was too late. She was nowhere near in sight.
I looked back at David and then back at the shadowy figure in front of us. The only source of light was now a single torch that was lit near the cemetery fence. I must admit that I was a little scared.
David stepped forth. "We're just passing through. We mean no harm to you."
The figure hid behind the tree again. Maybe it wasn't another Corrupt Alchemist. It seemed a little scared.
David pointed towards the exit and motioned for us to leave. It seems like he had a feeling this mysterious figure would not harm us. Could it have possibly been a ghost?
We finally made it to the exit, but Sin was still nowhere to be seen. My spirit weapon was glowing dim too. Spirits and spirit weapons formed a close bond with each other. When near the other, they would shine powerfully. The dimness of my sword further proved that we needed to find Sin as soon as possible.
I stopped for a second, as I heard a few branches cracking behind us.
"Maybe it's those white spiders," David said. "They're everywhere in that cemetery."
I shrugged. Then a wooden club suddenly landed in front of us. I looked at my friend with wide eyes. "Let's leave, NOW," I said. He laughed and followed my lead.
We made it to where the farmer boy Deian lived. I assumed he was either in bed or in town, since the lights of his house were turned off. His sheep all slept near the barn, however. All huddled together to keep warm. It was indeed a bit cold tonight.
David and I were silent as we made our way through the mountain plains. We saw buckets the citizens of town had left behind and lots of burnt wood that the fire had destroyed.
"At least they manage to control the fire here," I said.
"Yeah, imagine it had gone all the way to Deian's house!" David exclaimed. "Can anyone say lambchops??" We both laughed. "Hey, where do you think Sin is anyway?"
"Knowing her, she's hiding somewhere." I looked at my sword and raised an eyebrow. It was glowing bright. That would have meant that Sin was near. But where? I couldn't see her.
All of a sudden, we heard rustling in the tree above us. Not again, I thought. A brown, creature-looking thing jumped out of the branches and it was holding Sin!
"Let me go, you slimy freak of nature!" she yelled. "LET ME GO!!"
I was about to pull out my sword, but David stopped me.
"This Kobold means no harm," he said. "I think he just wants to play."
"PLAY?!" she struggled to loosen the Kobold's grip on her. "He can go back down to Gairech and find himself a little slutty female Kobold to play with. Or even a Troll! Yeah, go find a Troll!" She found a way to free himself and flew onto my head.
The Kobold frowned and started sobbing.
"I think he likes ya, Sin" David said.
"Of course he does, look at me."
"David, can you try talking to him? He might know something," I said, waiting for my friend to communicate with this Fomor.
David began saying a few basic words in Fomorian. He didn't know how to speak the language, but had easily grasped some words from all the books he had read on them.
Fomors were interesting creatures, to say the least. I had encountered countless of them in my life. I had killed many also. The idea that not all Fomors were malicious was still surprising to me. I always doubted them and never thought they were up to any good.
"Uhhh, Virtue?" David said. He looked confused. "I can't get him to understand me."
The Kobold kept looked at Sin and smiling. She would look at him with disgust.
"I... like.... shiny..." he said.
We all looked at each other stunned. This Fomor could speak some English! How incredible.
"I like... shiny!!" he kept on saying while running in circles. He ran into a tree soon afterwards, however. Maybe he wasn't a bright one.
"What is your name, friend?" David asked.
"Pe..... pe...." the Kobold responded. "PEPE!!"
"Pepe the Kobold?" Sin said. "Are you from Mexico?"
Pepe fell on the floor from laughter. He seemed like a good-spirited fellow.
The Kobold decided to follow us as we walked further northeast. David did most of the talking with him, while Sin avoided even looking at him. It was odd to see a Kobold around these parts too. The most common Fomors near Ciar were just goblins.
There was no fire in sight, but the ray of light still remained. I wondered where the rest of the fire team had disappeared to, as their buckets and tools had all been left behind. I feared the worst. Sin rubbed my shoulder, after sensing I had grown tense. It helped a little.
"Pepe, so what are you doing around here?" I asked.
"Pepe... look for trahsure!" he yelled. He showed us his pickaxe.
"Are you serious?" Sin said. "The mines are down at Bangor, you idiot."
David laughed loudly. "Hahaha, yeah Pepe, you had to go South, not North!"
Pepe shrugged. It didn't seem he really cared as long as he was with good company. He kept mining every single boulder we past by, still trying to find his "trahsure."
"Pepe look in ther!" he said as he ran into the woods in front of us. He spoke in third person for some strange reason. He didn't last one minuted before he ran back out screaming. "AHHHH!! AHHH!!!!!"
"What is it?!" I yelled. "What happened in there?!"
"Dead peeble! Dead peeble!" he started running around us in circles.
Peeble?, I thought. Then I screamed, "DEAD PEOPLE?!" He nodded and led us into the woods, where we found all of Tir Chonaill's fire team fainted on the ground. Some were bleeding, some had been really scratched up, some were dead...
I looked all around, trying to find my Grandpa, but I couldn't find him. I didn't know whether to feel relieved or scared. It looked like a bear had mauled them, but I didn't seen any bite or claw injures on their clothes or their bodies.
"Oh... my... god," Sin gasped. I looked up and saw a beam of light heading in my direction.
"WATCH OUT!" I yelled.
I jumped out of the way and looked up to see that both David and Sin were alright. I sighed with relief when I did. But something didn't feel right. Wait, Pep--, I thought.
I quickly turned around and found Pepe dead. He had been behind me. I had dodged the beam and left him completely open.
"Dammit!" I screamed. I started pounding the ground. "DAMMIT!!" I felt miserable.
David quickly got on his feet and ran towards me. "Virtue! There's more of them! Watch out!"
I looked up and there were more beams of lights being shot at us. I froze. I could hear David and Sin yelling at me to get out of the way, but I paralyzed with fear.
"HAAAAAAAA!!" a huge man pushed me out of the way with his enormous shield. He was about two times my height. I've never seen a man like so tall before. I groaned when he landed on me. He was all-muscle, he must've weighed a ton.
David ran up to me and pulled me up. "Thank you," he said to the bulky man.
The guy stood up and we finally saw his face. There were marks on it--tattoos of some kind--and he had a small beard. His shield was about my height and it was emerald green. In the front, there was an interesting symbol-- a knot of some kind. This giant had saved me from the same fate that Pepe met with.
"Who are you?" I asked.
He didn't have time to answer. Two enormous, obsidian wings gusted us backwards. I flew into a boulder, hitting my head quite hard. I was bleeding, but still could stand up.
I couldn't find David. Perhaps the wind had pushed him a little further, but Sin was in my pocket, scared for her life.
"Those wings..." I said.
I looked in front of us and there he was. The winged-man with the metal arm.
