  Would be nice if that applied to all LGBT people, though. The non-straight people do have it pretty good compared to the rest of the world, but most of society seems to forget that "LGBT" doesn't just mean people of different sexualities; it's supposed to apply to identity as well.

  in quebec it's not that bad, the gouvernement will even pay for the operation if you follow some guidelines for the transition.

  Highschool, gay support communities, circlejerk websites. It's hard to get an unbiased view of how general populace sees controversial topics if you're always mingling with only one side of the community.
  
  Mind you, there are actually only 16 states that legalized gay marriage at the moment, and that only happened very recently. 33 states have actually gone out of their way to specifically BAN gay marriage. LGBT acceptance is a winning battle, but it is still an uphill battle, not an easy downhill one.
  
  In a large majority of other countries, gay sex is legally punishable by death. In some, just identifying gay is enough to be put to death.

  It's a natural extension, though people don't actively think about it. It's great that there are less people seeing gays as a perverse desire, though convincing them that trans is not is stepping up to hard mode.

  That's true, but I think it is because people are still getting used to the idea of gays and lesbians, that trans is still something otherworldly for them... but I believe once homosexual rights are finally understood by majority, eventually there will be a time where transsexuals will be more fought for.
  
  I believe in some places like Canada and some of Scandinavia, they support it to the point where it is covered in citizens' free health, providing you are accepted as such(via therapy), and have rights that USA does not have and probably will not for a long time.
  I think you do not even need to marry in order to do things like become an official family, at least in Scandinavian countries which accept "cohabitation".
