So Facebook today about an hour ago bought OculusVR the company behind the highly anticipated Oculus Rift virtual reality head mounted display which I'm sure most of you already know.
Here's the facebook post where the anti-christ himself announced he bought OculusVR
What's the terrible news? Carmack works for facebook.
One of the most influential people in the history of the video games industry now works for facebook.
Honestly, I'd commit Sudoku if I was in Carmack's position.

Well there goes my plans of eventually buying one of those.

Valve is supposedly making one that makes Oculus look like it's 20 years behind.
Regardless, facebook acquirement doesn't necessarily make Oculus VR a problem. Facebook has actually acquired a large number of companies we are familiar with and interact with on a daily basis, and you don't even know it. Here is hoping that they follow a similar approach with their ownership of Oculus.

Login integration, generated ads, etc.
It's not that bad, poeple just like to hate things that are overused or even the tiniest bit annoying.

Yeah, it kinda sucks that everything can be logged on with facebook, especially when there aren't any other options. Adblock does a pretty good job of keeping facebook squeaky clean. Besides that though I find it really useful. It's literally a real life friend list.

I don't think you should rule out the Oculus Rift just yet.
The CEO is a greedy scumbag and was the one that sold Gaiki to Sony when it started to get tons of press. Pretty sure he sold Scaleform too, but I'm not sure.
Red flags were raised when this guy was made CEO.

If I remember correctly I think Valve said that they weren't working on one, but it was just to show what virtual reality HMDs are capable of.
But if they are that's great news even though I dislike Valve.

Look up facebook purity.

My first reaction to this was that I found it rather annoying and disappointing. After thinking about it for a bit, I realized it probably won't be an issue--at least not for the near future. If anything, the extra capital would help Oculus compete with whatever Sony is gonna launch. Oculus will stay independent for now and keep doing what they do best, and by the time FB's crap starts leeching into it, the 3D VR industry might take off and we'll have competitors to choose from.

Actually, Valve partnered with Oculus. The improvements in the latest Crystal Cove, which were then integrated into the 2nd version of the dev kit they just released, were thanks to the work Valve has done--namely with the low-persistence (blur-free) display tech.

That, and the fact that Zuckerberg sells user data to other companies and allows the US government, and iirc the Mossad access to their user data. And the site itself is infested with shitheads like any social network circlejerk since the average person uses it. I don't think you should ask why is there hate surrounding Facebook, but why anyone could find anything positive about it.
On the main topic, this is a damn shame. If Facebook just takes in the profits and lets Oculus do their own stuff it might be fine. But if they step into anything to make them benefit their new parent company, this is going to be shit. Good thing at least Sony has their own VR tech. I can see Sony scoring points off the Oculus now like when they gave Microsoft 3rd degree burns at E3 if Facebook gets aggressive with anything in the Oculus that doesn't have to do with improving the technology itself. ie, virtual reality ads.

Just heard that mojang/notch are dropping their project to make a occulus compatible minecraft because of this deal.
Notch hates facebook.

Game companies that were set to make their games work with the OR are already starting to drop out, not wanting to be associated with Facebook. Notch was first, cancelling the OR Minecraft deal and saying that Facebook "Creeps me out".

That's great. I actually laughed a little bit. I hope Zuckerberg realizes his ship is sinking and nothing can stop it.

Notch is kind of a fit-thrower and a heavy nonconformist though. Maybe rebellious is the word.

I think that being creeped out by Facebook is common sense. They control the personal information of the majority of the world's population.
