Sword/Axe/Mace and Shield if they could compete with lances would totally get my vote. While lances are fun, it just feels "right" with a sword or shield. That said...give me a halberd dammit.

Before lancing (yes I'm all heil to lance now), I were using 2h (red graded HLC, smash 18) with own SS. SS => Smash => Def => SS => Smash => Counter => SS => Smash. Pretty much easy win. Yes I still can do it with changing my MTU to 256, but this way my wifi-line become extremely unstable in plan of ping-spikes. So I'm using VPS, and it doesn't care about your MTU as it changes it automatically. So yes, I prefer usual close combat with bigger amount of combos possible instead of lance smash + pet + smash + pet + smash. Don't saying how much joke is lance counter. But piercing kills close combat and make's it useless in lord and MA. Even on HM you already see dmg difference and on Elite it drops dramatically.

5. Lance Charge frequently causes displacement and/or rubber-banding
6. Instinctive reaction still activates against lances from a distance
7. When using normal attacks with lances, players will still often be forced to lunge forward despite the fact that this feature has been removed
Minimum distance is the worst part, but for the most part these glitches/design flaws make lances rather frustrating at times.

Well, I personally like Lance better because it's easier to solo with lance blocking, especially with Guard +2, and it's not that hard to cut tails. You also only have one decent SnS above purple sharpness in Tri, so that really fucks with the damage that it can put out. Sure, you can move around real fast, but there isn't much cause for it when you can just block/roll evade with lances and then counterattack to fuck them monsters up.

And to be fair, since they can't compete with lances, shield + 1h, or even dual wielding aren't as viable anymore.
If these options are to be viable, there are several options devCat can do:
1. Buff shields.
2. Buff one-handed weapons (and no, defense piercing doesn't count)
3. Nerf lance.
4. Combination of the options stated above.
Personally, I'd rather see 1 and 2 than getting lances nerfed.

when they announced lances i was so stoked, thinking something along the lines of heavy spears, with the versatility of range, slashing and stabbing, but no. we get a huge pointy stick =.=
imagine my disappointment. I think that was the reason i quit two years ago actually, i even bought the premium char card for the "special" lance too ;-;

On one hand, lances are longer and have extra penetration power, which is always really nice. The bigger the weaponry the better, and you don't get much bigger than lances in mabi. On the other hand, with a sword/shield you can last a lot longer when you stand right in the thick of things. Which do I prefer? I'm going to have to go with the sword and shield. While the extra penetration from lance is amazing, I like it better when you can just keep going and going for a long time.

Two things I don't like about lances are:
a)minimum distance penalty kills players with high-latency and
b)cannot use defense
I personally find inability to use defense is a huge penalty (not just in PvP) but esp if I'm surrounded by 1vE mobs. You would have to rely on pets and lance counter if you can't OHKO mobs. With shields/2hands however you can use different combos instead of lance smash-slash-smash

The lances in that one G10 trailer? Yea it looks nice lol
At the end of the day, it pretty much comes down to what you prefer, most damaging or not. Dual-wielding will always be the funnest to meh lol
