When you compare TH to fireball, fireball is generally more useful because it hits a larger radius. A single high ranked gunner skill does as much damage as a 5 charged Thunder with zero charge and instant load. A single reforged crash shot does the same thing while not being aggroed by the whole pack. A reforged lance WM can hit upwards to +13k.
Unless you can constantly snap cast TH, I don't see it as being better than other skill sets. It's a good opening spell.

Thunder to me is a very useful spell. For one, in my eyes, it can be very powerful. Sure it has limited AoE compared to the other 2 intermediate spells...but the fact that it can hit 5 separate times makes it powerful. For me at least, thunder almost never fails to critical hit at least once, and when it crits, it hurts alot. Also Its limited AoE is perfect when soloing, as you can control mobs with it especially when theres an aggro limit. Thunder also acts as an A.I disruptor while in "standby" so you can set up anything you want in the 6 seconds it takes to rain down. Ice Spear can do it too but considering its AoE...yea you have to be very skilled at using ice spear to make the most of it. Finally, thunder is the only intermediate skill that you can chain to windmill, which makes it a decent defensive skill. Again the A.I disruption comes into play.
Finally you used gunner skills, reforged crash shot and reforged lanced windmill. Gunners skills like bullet storm and shooting rush are like ice spear to me. Either you kill it in one shot or you are forced to clean up after yourself. Crash Shot is a very nice snipping skill. You can do it from a safe distance and avoid aggro. Which is nice and all, but its comparable to a 5 charge fire lightning set up. I can do upwards of 20k damage to 5 enemies, only thing is i have to get close, which is ok to me. The fire lightning fuse bolt puts things on "alert" which disrupts A.I on some things :D. Finally windmill...Different story altogether. As a mage you're gonna be fighting from a distance. As a lance you fight with moderate distance. I'm aware non mage skills are instant load but thats because your activation distances are way different. Fireball and thunder have activation distance of 2000 while WM only has i think...500 around the user? yea can't remember but the only skill that compares to wm in a mages repertoire is shockwave, a decent defensive skill but only useful for saving your arse lol.
P.s Oh almost forgot about reforges... Reforged thunder is lethal. Without reforges or criticals, thunder hits about as hard as a non- crit fireball, cumulative damage wise. Now factor in random crits... Yea... On average thunder hits harder than fireball.
