Philips has launched a lawsuit against Nintendo in the US, and is asking for the Wii U to be removed from sale.
The electronics giant alleges that the Mario maker copied two of its technology patents. The first bit of code can mirror a user's real-life actions inside a game, with the second parent revolving around an input system featuring a pointing device.
"Philips has engaged in the field of applied electronics and has conducted research in areas relating to visual representation of spatial processes and to automatic processes," reads the claims of the legalese-heavy lawsuit.
"The present patents-in-suit stem from these fields of research and development and claims protection for an interactive system for which a user can remotely control devices in an intuitive manner. Such intuitive remote control mechanisms are used in present-day home video game consoles."
Philips says it has contacted Nintendo as far back as 2011 about the first patent, and that the company is aware of its second alleged infringement.
Philips is asking for a block on all sales of the Wii U and other allegedly infringing Nintendo hardware, (likely substantial) damages, and for everything to be decided with a trial by jury.
fuck.

I hope Nitendo wins. If Nintendo takes heavy losses, no more pokemon or zelda games :(
This it the biggest problem with the US patent system right here, it prevents innovation! Fuck our patent system to hell >.>

What Froglord didn't mention is that the patent is about a controller (Wiimote) and a camera (IR Sensor) that controls another device (The Wii).
So it not only affects the Wii U, but also the Wii.

Not at all.
Nintendo is worth more than Sony. Just because the Wii U isn't doing great doesn't mean they're not a wealthy company.
Also one thing Froglord forgot to mention is that Philips only seeks to ban the consoles in the United States not anywhere else.
Eh I don't personally think it's a big deal. Philips isn't a video game console manufacturer the two companies make different consumer products.

Hasn't Sony done the same with their remote thingy for the Playstation? (That thing with the pink ball on it, forgot the name)
Or does it function differently?
(I honestly thought that the idea for that thing was stolen from Nintendo's Wiimote at the time, but I could be wrong)

Not so much. They've been losing a ton of money the past few years with bad decisions in their direction choices. They lost I think around $250 million last year, and so far this year their profits are down over 30%. They can't really afford to take another big hit paying damages, not to mention the lost money if they had to pull all the Wiis and Wii U's like Philips is wanting them to.
I mean you can't really say "Well, they have a billion dollars so losing 500 million dollars won't hurt them." That's not how business works.

Yeah you're right.
Maybe the difference is that the Playstation Move is purely optional, or maybe they just want to go after Nintendo.

And what makes you think Sony doesn't have troubles of their own?
Sony loses are in the billions, have been for years, even with job and pay cuts.
Nintendo is going to keep making games. The Wii U might not be the best selling console and the worst outcome is that the Wii U won't be sold in the United States which is unlikely, but Nintendo is going to keep making games.
