we don't even know anything about these girls' parents
we don't even know if they knew they were playing hide and seek or if they were actually at home when this happened
so, really, we can't say anything about the parents except that i'm sorry their daughters turned out this way
Im sure our local newspapers will do coverage for sure.

As expected. They will be attempting to downgrade the case into juvenile court.

I honestly don't think they should be tried as adults. They are 12 years old for christ sake and have mental issues, in addition to their minds not being fully developed so they probably didn't realize the full consequences of what they were doing.

It's not mental issues, horror shit like slenderman are popular among preteen girls. There's honestly ALOT more murders involving preteens reinacting bloody mary, or some other paranormal killer than slenderman. They knew what they were doing with intent, as a consequence, they should be locked up in prison for 60+ years.

I remember reading about stages of human development, most people start to develop sense of role (other than general identity) beginning high school, when club, sports and other hobbies start to develop people's personal identity. So 14 I guess? So there is some leeway in term of their responsibilities for their actions.
Idealistically speaking criminal justice we have is far from perfect, I read some much better justice system a year ago, it having to do with criminals facing the family of victim or victom and give them closures while at the same time truly show the criminal the consequences of his/her crime. I forgot the name of this, but I do believe it is better than our current system.

I don't really think it is appropriate to try a 12 year old as an adult. But even so, if this case were about an adult having done this, it still wouldn't be too difficult to claim insanity due to the background story behind it. All things considered, the sentencing will probably be very light, a few years in juvi or a mental ward, some community service, etc.
60+ years? Only if this:

That's a terrible legal system. Do you know how many criminals don't regret what they have done and would just use it as a chance to further traumatize the family/victim? That would only be punishing the victim and family while the criminal gets away with nothing.
In other news, I believe 12 is old enough to know what murder is. I certainly don't know any 12 year olds that don't. So unless they find out these girls both have crippling mental illness, I fully support them being tried as adults. They planned the murder, so it was a premeditated attack with full intention to kill.
Someone capable of planning a murder in secret is capable of knowing what murder is and understanding their actions. Normally when someone 'doesn't understand what they did' it's something that happened on the spur of the moment, not something they collaborated with others to plan out for months.

Family needs to give permission before the confrontation happens. You'd be surprised how many criminals are just the product of rough childhood and actually regret their actions. And you might also be surprised how many families want to make sense of the crime against their loved ones or themselves. The question they want to ask the most is often "why?" And this system give them that.

"Because it was fun. BAHAHA." Criminal proceeds to spit in their face and describe in gory details how he raped and killed their daughter.
Yeah, I'll pass.

I have to agree with bonaparte. Punishment only begets more violence. Something is obviously wrong with our legal system when you see how much of the US population is incarcerated.
Perhaps I'm a bit too idealistic on my views of the world, perhaps I have a bit of sympathy for the potential child murderers as they have their entire life ahead of them.
Either way, I'm sticking to what I said previously and do stand by that.

I would much rather the kids and the parents go through a few years of a mental health program, then have the girls be sentenced.
It seems pretty obvious they were not either insane or pure evil, and this would take care of both ends. Just insane? I heard mental healthcare can actually work (suprise) and having the parents involved would help them learn parenting skills if they need.
If, at the end of their few years in a mental institution, they still are unapologetic about it, and don't seem to be mentally unstable, the doctors can give a recommendation to lock them up in prison.
Just locking everyone up in prison does nothing to help anyone. Like someone above said, everyone wants to know they key word of "Why". If we could figure out the why, we might be able to help rather than to push them in prison.
I would also like the parents to be questioned and supervised, because of my earlier theory that they were partially to blame. It is true that I didn't have enough information to back my theory, so it would be interesting to see more than a news reporters take on their parenting skills.

It's best to stray away from discussions involving the concept of
evil, as the term itself is defined through the relative morality of right and wrong.
These girls clearly put a lot of thought into the act but perhaps they did not fully realize the consequences of their actions. The arguments of both ignorance and insanity would be met with the same reaction as most other capital crimes. Insanity seems more likely as they don't seem remorseful at all based on the statements which they've made.
They aren't going to lock these girls up in a prison. They'll go to a juvenile detention facility until they're old enough to be admitted to prison. Depending on their progress, appeals can be made favoring a reduced sentence.
I'm not opposed to locking these girls up. Their position in society can be filled by some other randomly generated kids who don't get a kick out of murder. Shit like this happens in the ghetto all the damn time and nobody gives a fuck. Hell, let it happen to some
white girls who blame (video games, internet stuff) and everyone loses their minds.
