I'll just leave this here.
Really, though. The real reason "bronies are the worst thing ever" is because the show is entirely uninteresting. They're the worst thing ever for the same reason people who play video games on their cell phone, or who listen to Jack Johnson
on purpose are the worst thing ever.
I mean, it's not that Jack Johnson's songs are
-bad, per se. They're just, y'know... the kinda stuff where, if I hear it, would appear to indicate that I am currently in an elevator, or on phone-hold with customer service. It's not "unmusical" or anything. In fact, it's not even irritating, unlike a lot of similar music. It's just kinda... there.
For me, the idea that adults of any gender would have some sort of well-cultivated enthusiasm for this show is just... odd. Between the sincere enthusiasm of the fanbase, the Disney Technicolour-ishness of the art, and the fact that it
really is just another stupid kid's show, it's kinda like watching people squee and cheer and dress up in weird costumes to go to an elevator music concert.
In fact, I think I just described KISS.
And Lady Gaga.
And Michael Jackson.
And any number of other musicians who were really never that good, but never that bad either, who successfully compensated for would-be mediocrity by cultivating a nigh-worshipful fanbase, what liked 'em more for the stage persona than the music.
What separates people like Jack Johnson and Lauren Faust from the above, is they're not engaging in, or even encouraging, that kinda showmanship. They really are just doing what they set out to do. And people love 'em for it. And I, personally, can't see why. People are screaming and fawning and getting all kinds of worked up over the television equivalent of elevator music.
It's a rainbow-coloured kid's show. Or lemme put it this way: It's
My Little Pony. If I were 8, I might be in a position to comment on whether or not it's a worthy return of that franchise. But I'm not 8, and I watched enough My Little Pony when I
was 8 to:
A) like it, and
B) know exactly why I am not still watching it these days.
I mean, that should be all that needs to be said, right there. It's My Little Pony. It's, like, a textbook definition of non-offensively non-interesting. The fact that so many people find it so interesting, let alone find it offensive, is in itself far more interesting than the show itself could ever hope to be. It is the Rocky Horror Picture Show of children's television.
