I'm looking to start a new pet that will be something like a personal favorite. What would be the best pet in terms of skills per level and how would I properly level these pets at this time of year?

Get any AoE pet. Preferably bone/ice dragon, pegasus, scooter, nimbus, etc.
How do you level them? Summon them before you finish a shadow mission, then let them leech off the exp. That's how. Don't waste your summoning time logging in as a pet.

Wait are you referring to boss killing exp. here or the actual end mission exp.? I was under the impression pets wouldn't gain from quest exp. due to the wording "While summoned a pet gains 25% of the experience their masters earn
in battle," is this misinformative?

Bone dragon is the best combat pet.
For fast leveling, I actually did 1~60 in 2 days of summoning time by just killing iria mobs (mongoose, lions)

Which actual group of mobs gave the most exp for you?

- Play as the pet and slaughter mongoose, lions, desert bears.
- Keep the pet summoned while doing pursuit; nets a few hundred for your pet and thousands for you. You need to be very very very strong for this though; veteran/master bandits don't play around.

It's just bad wording. Pets still do get partial mission exp.

If you're an elf, you can abuse mounted range to not get aggro'd for bandits.
Otherwise, you can also spam AoE pets, or lullaby.
Again, I highly recommend against playing as a pet, it's a waste of time as you can get the exp from missions easily.
Another way that I didn't mention is just do mounted lance charge all the time.

mini guide
level 1~10 anything, leech off of your dailies
level 11~30, long horned gnus
level 31~60, lions
Bone dragons are the easiest to train because they have the devil's cry skill which does a lot of damage and slows the opponent. It also has the ability to fly away against multi-aggros and petrifying roar for occasional aoe.
I did it during the 2x monster exp weekends and took me 2 summoning days. You could easily do it within 3 normal summoning days.

Really? That's the first I'm hearing Shadow/Theatre Missions providing EXP to pets. I always heard quests never provided EXP to summoned pets.

I thought the same thing haha. But I was honestly curious about since a SM/TM's ending exp. is more.. forced, rather than just clicking a "complete" button, ya know? Glad to know it's a thing now.

From wiki
While summoned a pet gains 25% of the experience their masters earn in battle, but when playing as the pet they gain full experience plus a percentage based on the type of pet and its Intelligence; it is recommended to play as the pet for maximum experience.
I don't think the ending mission experience is partially given to pets.
Did a google search on pet exp and I haven't seen anything about pet gaining partial mission reward exp. :what:

Should be easy to test. Screenie pet exp before SM completion and screenie after. See how much the exp changed and make sure you factor in the monster exp from the boss/end room mobs.

Nope, from what it seems, pets do not get a percentage of the shadow mission ending exp.

I mean, I had a pet that leveled up after completing Dorren's request. So...

I personally do Plateau wild bores until level 30 when I grind pets. They only have 21 max, 0 def, and 400 hp, while giving 700 ~ 1200 exp based on modifier. Plus they spawn in a cluster all day, every day.
