[UB]I agree completely with kaeporo. I also agree with ironwomen and nui for the most part, except for the part that reads "don't get hit" to some extent.
It's much easier said than done, especially for someone who isn't THAT familiar with the combat system. Fighter also lacks mob control, which can contribute to getting hit. It doesn't look like the original poster is at a level to hybrid multiple talents, which rules out the factor of using other talents for efficient mob control in the case of multi-aggro. There will always be a time in which something goes wrong, and you get hit. This is where having SOME defense is useful. As long as you can take a few hits, you should be fine.
I only have ~80 defense, but that's more than enough tbh. I remember first coming to Nation seeking advice as a newbie. I was going to move into warrior since I hit expect mage at the time, but I was advised against it. I was told to finish the magic tab before moving on, which I did. I'm almost completed in terms of magic. I'm glad that I listened to them, my damage output is significantly higher than what it used to be, or what it would be if I hybrided so early. To the original poster: listen to what some of these people have to say. Some of them are at end-game, and have experience that newer players don't. If I had not listen to them when I was asking for help, I don't even know what stupid things I would be doing now.
Now for my opinion on the matter. I would NEVER give up 20% of my damage for def. Why? I can just use alternative means to increase my own survivability. How? Rank Def, increase str (which scales very nicely), and pet control. And if I am forced to the point in which I cannot do much more due to my lack of survivability, I would make a smaller sacrifice in damage instead of that 20%. How? Use Master of Shields Title instead of blood master or "who saved the goddess" title, although, I'll switch out after I increase base def if I were you.
I've seen people who create tanky characters, but trust me, it doesn't work as well as some may think. Unless you're a vales shield giant, there's no way you can tank harder content like mid-end MA rounds, elite, and lord. Instead, you'll be 999999999999999999x slower than someone who went for more damage. Takes too long to clear stuff if you lack damage. I know the original poster wasn't after being tanky, but I'm just putting it out there, since it relates to the topic.
However, in the end, it's up to you to decide. What is more fun? Extra defense that doesn't matter later on, or the ability to survive better now? As long as you're enjoying yourself, it doesn't really matter. I find joy in pretty numbers, which have affected my views on this topic. [/UB]

"don't get hit" doesn't really exist when you have so much latency your magic doesn't want to shoot at the enemy 1/3 of the time because of positioning lag.
If I lived significantly closer to where mabi is hosted I would agree with that aspect of gameplay, but to me it hasn't been a realistic expectation, ever (since I started in 2008).

I live in Texas and I have no issues avoiding damage when I want to. I'm not sure where you live but it couldnt be too much worse than mine unless you live really northeast somewhere in canada or something...

And having a better connection is part of it. I mean, this doesn't even have to do with min/maxing, this is about basic needs.
Hell, I'm playing from Korea across the Pacific Ocean this summer. Sure, it isn't as lagless as it was in Minnesota, but I can still summon pets just fine.

ITT: The OP asks
Quote from JasonHero;1237565:
So a while ago, someone told me that heavy armor lowers damage from fighters. Is that true? I cant find anything on the wiki about it. Is it the loss of dex?
and Ricewagon succinctly answers with:
Quote from Ricewagon;1237568:
If you're a Human/Elf, heavy armours will reduce your 3rd stage skills by 20% if your Chain Mastery is at rank 1. Giants don't lose any damage though!
Here's the wiki page on it:

So the thread should have ended there but then y'all just

and the style tab costs money and isn't permanent. So im fine with not purchasing it.
Im not sure who the admins of the forum are or not, but i think the thread should be closed by now.

You get free 30 days on character creation, tons of events giving out pons. Even then you could spend like 10$ and get a good like 8-10 months worth of style tab. You dont have to spend money on the style tab but its not a very good excuse to give bad advice to a player that needs help.
To lazy to look at the forum rules but I dont think any thing in this thread is grounds for thread locking so stop trying to get it locked for no real reason. Just because the op was answered doesnt mean this thread cant be used as a discussion for this topic at hand its been done multiple times on different threads as long as its relevant to the topic at hand. If not then a mod is welcome to lock it but I havent seen a reason for it to be locked yet.

By no means is further discussion against the rules and the natural purpose of forums is of course insightful discussion. But this... Diversion let's call it - has gone way beyond anything useful to the OP. Honestly it's just tactful to make a new thread because contesting whether or not that 20% loss is significant is far beyond the scope of the validation the OP asked.
If the OP wanted everyone's wonderful colourful opinions, they would've asked so in a follow up response and last I checked - that post is nowhere to be found.

I believe the information discussed so far in this thread is relevant enough to the op to give them some helpful insight on their original issue. While it may not have been asked for it is definitely helpful nonetheless and if it isnt then it was a nice little debate about it. I see no harm here.

Whoa whoa.. calm down. Not only did i never tell them to wear what looks good, (on the contrary, i said
I wear it because it looks good) but if i have to pay for it then it is certainly within my descretion as to whether or not i pay for a style tab. My choice obviously is that i do not, and so i wear what looks good regardless of the consequences.
Not to mention my character is ... very old, i don't think the 30 days style tab applies to me anymore.
Like another poster said, the topic has definitely strayed offtopic and has turned into an argument between multiple people here on a point the OP didn't really want. I asked that it be closed, and if it is decided that its still relevant and not closeable then so be it.

iGuess but it still comes off as impertinent to me and others who lurk lol.

I've gotten free pons twice. They don't come out that often.
-
ironwoman wrote on 2014-08-08 04:27
Actually, there are plenty events that popped them out. I got pons from events at least four times, and I still have leftover pons from those to this day, enough for three months. Even so, buying a year worth of style tab is minimal compared to what a player might spend on gachas, reforges, rebirths, etc.
