  I personally try to at least answer the person if they are asking me a question and im obviously not afk but sometimes i dont even notice them talking...

  People are selfish. It's nature, even i am, simply because people message me at the most odd times, i respond when i can, but people get pissy at me when i dont respond.
  
  Can't have both worlds people. I work night shifts and i sleep during the afternoon, so getting pissy at me will result in a verbal beatdown.

  I work in the service industry. It's my job to talk all day to people, and by the time I get home I'm really not interested in idle chit chat. After work if you dont have a convo that interests me I will either hardly respond, not respond, or tell you i dont want to talk. You can get as mad as you want to at me, but that wont make me want to talk to you any more.

  Pretty sure everyone hates being ignored. I think ignoring someone shows bad upbringing and that you have no respect for said person. I guess people just aren't as ashamed of themselves when they do this online, compared to IRL, since you can pretend you're AFK and assume the other person doesn't know if you are or not for certain. I think people are rarely fooled, though.. especially when you don't return a response at all (nobody AFKs for ever.) If you don't wanna talk to someone, just tell 'em.
  
  There's this one girl who literally only talks to me after she breaks up with her BFs. She's really chatty when single, but otherwise, it's like talking to a wall. I usually delete people like that--the only reason she's still there is because we used to be good friends for many years now. I guess I'll just get rid of her during my next clean-up of Skype contacts. xd

  As long as your friends are clear on this, I think it's fine. If not, they are going to assume that you don't value them. Whether that's important to you or not is up to you, though.
