I haven't been able to play my games for two god damn days due to DDoS attacks aimed at XBL and PSN and I have to go back to work tomorrow

It was their way of telling people to spend time with their families instead of playing games. Lol

They should be back up now. Kim Dotcom got them to stop the attacks. #Diplomacy.

Businessinsider says
The group explained why it started attacking PlayStation Network and Xbox Live — it was initially “for the laughs,†but then they wanted to force these companies to upgrade their networks’ security. The group also explained why it stopped attacking those networks: internet entrepreneur Kim Dotcom offered lifetime premium memberships to his private file-sharing service, Mega.

Buncha kids.
Back in my day if you did a stunt like this they'd take away your keyboard and mouse for a month.
And honestly, I would be all too happy to see an actual lynching of these kids as an example to others not to be assholes. Up a tree by a rope around their neck, posted on twitter and facebook for all to see. It'd become a meme I'll bet.
Its way too convenient for the government to provide such juvenile thugs with the tools and targetlists to do stuff like this, then turn right around and blame anonymous while attempting to leverage people's frustrations with the downtime as motivation towards taking away our internet freedoms.
Unfortunately once again that's what it comes down to. We're not going to be allowed to have our freedoms because some people are assholes and can't use that freedom responsibly- instead using it to vandalize other people's things and cause serious downtimes.

I think the lynching part is a little extreme....

I agree. Perhaps a few years in prison getting chain-gangraped might be enough?

Lesson here?
Microsoft and Sony are too stingy to buy proper server infrastructure that can fend off kids being assholes.
Gaben probably gets shot at all the time and figured out how to deal with it efficiently.

It's not surprising. Sony has a history of not investing in their servers.
Xbox Live is just prone to being taken down every year on Christmas by traffic without DDoS.
Valve is more focused because Steam is purely online. Maintenances are quite common though and it's annoying.
There's also lag problems on Valve's games.
