So what made the majority of people admit the game went to shit? Last time I checked, everyone was still jaded as hell.

It's Mabi, it was different and it still is, albeit to a lesser extent. It's a lot less fun than what it used to be. Some people also just keep playing it to have something (anything) to do...or they just don't want to move on to another game anymore.
Having played Mabinogi for 5 years, my view on other games has changed a lot for sure, nothing feels the same anymore.
The game has definitiely "gone to shit" compared to then, but I guess it's just that hard to give it up, for some.

As for the "community feel" part of this discussion, I don't really know what to say. While I did get to know a little bit about people around here, I never really felt able to fit in, most people on Nation already knew eachother for the longest time and it was hard to simple break into that circle of friends that already existed.
The time I was most active I was just looming in the darkness, waiting to jump whenever things went out of hand. And I don't know if people actually liked having me around for being a mod or just because of who I am.
Oh shi- that's too sad, skip that, too late, you probably already read it!
Anyway, I can't speak for many others, but I do know that a lot of good people who used to frequent this place back then started leaving over time, and with no new people being able to keep a lon-term interest in Mabination, the activity in this place slowly declined.
EDIT: DevCAT needs to get their heads out of their hinies and accept customer suggestions for once. I mean, what's it with game devs always asking for suggestions and feedback but almost never doing anything with them? Nexon and DevCAT aren't the only ones at fault in this, almost all game devs/publishers are the same, it's pretty dumb and if they actually did something with what we tell them, things could actually improve over time.

The site isn't really dead, true, but the community feel is. Go into the gaming section and pick a game you own with online multiplayer and ask if anyone wants to play with you. See how many people will want to. Go make an event for the forums that has nothing to do with Mabi. See how many people compared to the active members partake in the event (hint: the last one made only had one person interested, and the one before that only had three people from the Mabi section participate, while the vast majority of the particpants were people who had either already left the site, or were about ready to stop being active). Hell, go into the Mabi section, and say that you'll host a pet only raid of Peaca, where only the plain pets that don't have special skills can participate, and at the end, you'll have a raffle for some random thing, and see how many people take you up.
Yes, there's a lot of information still being passed around, but again, Mabi has very clearly gone stale when at one point in time, the only interesting talk going on about it was about the maps of the game, rather than the game itself.
I may be nostalgia blind by saying this, being one of the first members of this community back when it was MabiGuru (hell, I even remember seeing Strafe advertise the site when it first started while I was lurking on Sleepywood, even though I didn't join until after a couple of weeks to see if I even wanted to play Mabinogi), but we used to not be called a fansite. We were a fan community. While Mabinogi was the central game all of us played, we didn't completely ignore that there were other games out there. If there was a new MMO coming out that looked interested, the large majority of the community got together and started playing, making a guild in that game [s]before out right dropping the game[/s] while we played it. Forum events were held, and not just the "post here and randomly win gold/pet" event either. Stuff like the secret Santa or the Pokemon tournament I used earlier as an example would have had more people join them then now. You would have had quite a few people join you on that pet run for the shits and giggles, they wouldn't have cared about the raffle at the end. Why? Because they wanted to play together.
Now, members of this site's "community" falls into one of three categories:
1: They are either an old player that maxed out most of their skills, so now they only care about big numbers, even if they could already steamroll through all of the content three digits earlier, but won't quit because they'd realize how much time and money they've wasted on a game that really didn't give them much in return.
2: They're a new player, or returning player who hasn't quite realized that the game is nothing but perpetual grinding, and in the case of the latter (depending on when they last played), only picked it up because the nostalgia was too much for them too handle, so they picked it up again.
3: Former players that moved on from Mabinogi, but want to try and stay with the community that they've spent so many years with, so they continue posting about games outside of Mabinogi hoping that someone will play with them, all while pretty much being despised by the people in group one, and possibly some people in group two.
I think you are forgetting about another group which albeit is much smaller but is nonetheless a big driving force in the Mabinogi community.
That is the KR Testers such as me, Kapra, Herro, and Teto. Granted we at least hang around the other sections and interact with the community as a whole.
At this point I'm just here to share info from KR Mabinogi and to participate in the community. My interest in mabi doesn't stretch much further than that.

I remember when Reforges first came out, that's when I knew I was done. Some of the people in this very thread were the biggest voices in defending them, and that's hilarious.

My love was killed after 3 months of restored whitehorse farming, then less than a month after all that hardwork was given the middle finger with restored whitehorse gacha. The absolute endgame enchants became a joke in one update lol, I hated reforges but i could live with them, I'm just so sick of gacha shitting out everything good, that's about it. Great game, it really is one of a kind and an amazing game. But nexon is way too greedy, even for a f2p game, they only care about money.
Tl;dr
Keeping veteran players around and giving them more carrots to go after isn't part of their agenda anymore, they just throw each and every possible carrot into gacha so anyone can buy them.

I can honestly say that once I couldn't even bother to login to Mabi anymore,a chunk of this died for me. Though this is still a decent community and all ( [s]though I rarely even post these days. Yikes. >_> [/s] )
But yeah,Mabi's one of a kind but...wait...it's been THAT many months since anything was really added...? I used to get a kick out of reading Update stuff for Mabi, but I could tell it was on a bit of a downhill spiral when even the 'strongest' bosses and such became 'easymodo'.
summary: Maybe it is time for a secondary / more open section than just Mabi..? Though we DO have that General Discussion section and all...

It's really hard for me to justify playing mabi anymore. I feel like I should due to the money put in the game as stated, but logging in to a friendslist full of offlines, just to kinda play around for a bit through some quests isn't the most fun. Most of the people around me now are playing games like Smite, and joining quick matches and talking to people is just so much more convenient. I try to stick around here as its easier to justify communicating with people than forcing myself to play mabi just because i put money into it. I really did and do enjoy most of the people here, for some reason its just so much harder for me to stay active than it used to be.

There's no incentive for Nexon to care about older players.
In fact there is quite the incentive for them to methodically piss off and get rid of older players
Quite simply, older players already have bought all the pets they want and are sufficiently well established that nothing in game is challenging anymore and anything they want can be bought easily using gold instead of NX. They are people who Nexon has already made their money from, and now they just waste server capacity for little further profit.
On the other hand Nexon wants nothing more than to get rid of older players and bring in new ones. People who have to buy that latest pet, or haven't the means of getting gold and so are required to spend NX on gachapons for items or revival stones for a boss they struggle with.
Nexon does still care about Mabi- but only how profitable Mabi can be without triggering a mass ragequit. And to that end they are putting as little effort as possible into maintaining it with the expectation that as a 10 year old MMORPG it has made its money and is past its popularity, milking out the last of profit before it is laid down to die. Cash cow items like reforges and gachapons are just Nexon's tool of choice for extracting money from the mabi players, and if you think about it you realize it is only because of that sustained profitability that Mabinogi has even been allowed to live this long.
I've played since Pioneers of Iria, and I think the height of it was actually when G13 came out. At the time the community was strong, although G13 marked the introduction of filler storyline it also brought in a skill rebalance that really helped level the playing field. Not long after that modding became a thing, and the knowledge dervived from modding was used to create hacks as well cumulating in the Pake outbreak of G14 and G15.
I was there, and really for me that is when Mabi died. It went from being a fun thing to do to being a part time job playing detective and figuring out what was happening. For me it never really was fun again after that, although I will enjoy weekend runs with friends and still can be found in Dunbarton from time to time wearing the same Flowery Evening Dress I've had since G14.
The new skill trees are broken, and grossly overpowered. And this was by design- give the newbies a chance to be awesome, and salt the wounds of the stubborn veterans who toughed out the hacking so that they too would quit. In time they will be balanced out again, but by then the community will have changed. Most of the old players will be gone, most of the new players now won't be so new anymore, and there will be even more newbies coming in without end.
That mabiland event they did, you think that's just a fun event?
No, its really not. Its actually gathering statistics. The Mabiland event generates participation statistics for Nexon, giving them percentages of the playerbase to participate in the different game features and even directly measuring how old the playerbase is. Its quite useful for Nexon, because they can easily analyze the results of the event to better adjust the game for people to enjoy it and want to spend money on it.
I suppose its a good thing that they've finally decided to see how we measure up.

Well, from my data they can gather that the hammer game is shit because with even the slightest lag winning is next to impossible, that I fucking hate spending hours trying to get un-fat, and that the prizes from the cave of trials were too shit to waste the potions on. Also that gambling is good, because I bought nothing but coin boxes with my coins.
