Hyperbolic much?
Anywho, terrible move.
Too tired to type so I'm going to copy and paste what a friend said.
For $1.89 I could buy the new Dwemer-inspired Gifts of Akatosh armour set by Steam user Corvalho, but do I trust him? Did he create the armour? Is that the only thing he adds to the game with this mod? Will this break other armour mods I already use? For all I know I just paid nearly two dollars to triple the speed of all my enemies, double the weight of all items, make the game's main missions impossible to beat, break the armour sets I do use, and turn all the women into futanari with massive throbbing erections - and how would I know which user mod even did this change to my game? There are no checks and balances to keep users safe, there never have been, but now money is involved.
He also talked about how the modders can just end support for a mod making it incompatible/broken. Valve has been shitting steam up for years but I never expected this. They can be spending their time fixing Steam, but they're purely focusing on profits at this point which some of you might say "Well they do need profits" but there are features users have been requesting for years and Valve has done nothing but ignore them.

You can always rate mods 0, report them to be taken down, and get refunded for obviously malicious mods. Nobody likes spending money, but it means developers can spend time and effort to create quality mods. People can still create free mods if they want.

There's a 24 hour refund period. But hey, this is still LOLworthy, glad i don't use mods or i'd be even more upset

Valve takes forever to answer to reports unless the situation has gone popular/public.

The situation is grim.
It has literally divided the modding community in half, reaching epic battle proportions to the level that even well known names that authored popular mods are on the verge of ragequitting because of the dramatics more than anything else.
Making game mods is supposed to be a hobby, something you do because you want to and enjoy having fun with it. And most of the game mods out there are excellent examples of shoddycode and poor practice from inexperienced programmers, software that I would never consider paying money for other than as a token of gratitude for a well written mod that implements a feature I really wanted to have.
Trying to actually sell game mods makes it so they aren't mods anymore, they're unofficial DLC. And at that point you might as well incorporate yourself as an indie game studio, there was absolutely no need for Steam to try and paywall off the workshop.
Steam has turned evil- they are on the path of becoming the next EA. Of course we all saw this coming. After all once you get a taste of profits you can't stop until everyone hates you and refuses to buy your products.
