  I also admittingly have yet to see it. I have heard about Unlimited X Works though but never looked into where it originated from. I guess I'll have to check out the anime now so I can understand the crossover.

  However, if this is anything like the SAO "event" it will be good prizes supplement by an actually boring event.

  I don't know how to make sense of your comment. It is a currently airing anime of a well known franchise. Though I feel it is not promoting anime life at the expense of fantasy life, it is rather promoting fantasy life by having anime life. One can say that it is a sign of growing commercialism and whatnot ignoring the combat system and various other facets of the game for fashion and crappy events.

  [SPOILER="high impact theorem"]I'll be frank, its not exactly a mainstream anime, being VN->anime material, but it has gotten some airtime on quite a few places, due to Fate/kaleid liner PrismaIllya being literally two steps from [S]yuri[/S] fanservice-tier, with this being still ongoing, and Unlimited Blade Works being their latest project.
  Its not Shingeki no Kyojin, but there's literally only been half a dozen animes that reach that level of "severely disliked because it got that fuckhuge of a fanbase, which ended up being defined by idiots". This is also one of the FEW crossovers that we've actually even heard about. There's been a Shakugan no Shana crossover in JP, about three years old, the DFO one as well, two years old, among several others we probably wont get and have near no knowledge of. They seem to be doing large-projects which they announce heavily, and almost always start in JP.
  
  Also, fun fact: JP IS BEHIND US SOMEHOW. I'm not seeing ANYTHING of renovation on their site, they're currently in mabiland.[/SPOILER]

  I wouldn't say JP is ahead or behind us. Sometimes they get stuff first, sometimes we get stuff first. I can't remember if those crossovers were mentioned here (I am pretty sure they were) but I do remember hearing about them. As a result, I wouldn't say this is "one of the few cross overs that we've actually even heard about."
  
  JP is a pretty bad comparison all in all though. JP gets a lot of stuff we don't get; if this is being released in KR there is a higher chance we'll get it in NA. It's never guaranteed, but we get more KR content than JP content.
  
  As for why they chose this anime, you're probably right. It's not the most popular or mainstream, but it's fans are generally pretty hardcore and the fact that it's full of fan service helps (though I personally hate fan service). I honestly preferred Fate/Zero because it was much more intense, but I'm not surprised that they chose the general fate/stay night release.

  Not to totally derail or anything but I am kind of surprised we haven't seen a Bleach, Naruto, or One Piece crossover (correct me if I'm wrong). Perhaps those are too big of anime; maybe nexon can only afford to crossover "somewhat" successful anime.

  I think this collab is based on the ufotable version of FSN: unlimited blade works that is currently airing, not on the old FSN adaptations.
  This new series doesn't have much in terms of "fanservice" and while not as good as fate/zero it is in similar style/tone and holds up as a sequel to it.
