I don't see how other games being released is relevant.
Great games are released on a regular basis, that doesn't mean all current games get ditched suddenly and die off. Games aren't wives/husbands, you can have more than one at once.

yeah but you only have so much time to play so many at a time.
we'll see when the time comes, but i'm predicting that a lot more people will be leaving than now when those titles come out

I've noticed that the last two people to make these threads were low leveled characters.
This low level character played back in 2008, stopped in 2010, came back in 2012 and left in 2013. Now back in 2015, the game feels a lot more empty.

If anything, a newer player would be the one to notice any changes in the population. While a long-standing player will tend to observe trends, much like a tree, they're less likely to notice a twig break when compared to the sapling.

Mabi dying? No.
But all the older vet will always remember the first couple years of the game as the "best years" in their gaming life on that mmo.
Just like every mmo, it becomes a cash cow, mabinogi is no exception, especially if it is a free to play mmo.
Peria, Tree of Savior, etc. they will start off in its golden years like Mabinogi but eventually will fade out into the same existence as Mabinogi, and I am sure someone in Peria or Tree of Savior will post, "Is Peria/Tree of Savior dying?" followed be response of "xx new game is going to replace it." once again initiating that cycle.
In my eyes, Mabinogi may not be in its prime anymore, but it lives its day peacefully. Cash shop wise, it's actually very affordable, much better than games like Flyff, who are true cash cows.
There may not be 2-3 full channels on my server of Mari back in the day, but the shop, population, and new people I meet every day are of interest.
Naturally you will recognize older vets and friends more than that level 1400 stranger who joined your party and more likely notice when that friend or older vet disappears, will leave a much more impressible impact on you.
If I have to put it to words...
The current population on mari is stable. While it may not be at its peak, in terms of population and activity it has reached a stable amount of players. With enough new people joining to keep the population on a stable line, and the current players slowly becoming stronger and blooming into intermediate, advance, and finally veteran players.
Since Mabinogi has no level cap, the very old veterans will see their colleagues and counterpart moving on as a very big gap. They will likely be out of their comfort zone, and while new "vets" are being born, the "Senior Vets" will not recognize their power or skill. I see it all the time. A person who is 8k is considered strong, but someone who is 14k+ may see them as nothing more than a flourishing player due to their high level and time spent on game. Because of that, senior vets will have a hard time as time goes on since senior vets aren't really "replenish", finding someone who is on the same total and knowledge of the game becomes increasingly rare and harder for them to cope.
Though matters aside, I enjoy the game for what it is. I have been with this game since 2008, and I play it because I love it. Whether we get a higher population or not, as of right now, Mari is pretty cozy. Whatever the future holds, whether I witness Mabinogi growing or dying, down to its very last breath, I will see Mabinogi from beginning to end, and whether that end is in 2-3 years or 15 years from now, I can be proud of the memories, fun, and to some degree, challenge this game has brought me.

.
I agree with most your of your post except this point. The first year or two of mabi (in NA) were the worst in my opinion. We were getting updates fast (that one point we got Pioneers of Iria, EU experienced something similar but bigger in Uncharted Lands), but things were unstable back then. Everything needed premium until Pioneers came out (doings gens, having spirit weapons, using transformation after you unlock it from the gen), and after Pioneers came out the servers were just unstable. I remember having an emergency maint lasting over 24 hours that started right after the previous maint. Even up until G8 there was constant server instability.
At least now things are things are arguably
just boring. Better to be boring than be that shit.
