You just have to pay shipping.

For those who haven't heard about it, Google Cardboard is basically a very cheap cardboard frame you can insert your phone into, turning it into a basic VR headset. It's no Oculus Rift by any means, but the results are still really awesome and lets you play around with VR at almost no cost (assuming you already have a decent smartphone!)
Google's introduction presentation for Cardboard, from last year:

OnePlus is a new smartphone manufacturer--they are giving away Cardboards because they will be launching their new phone, the OnePlus 2, through a VR presentation. They'll be the first to try this. :3

Well darn, that was quick. You can find Google Cardboard kits on Amazon and such, too. I'm not really sure which ones are considered good, though.

You could, as the specs/plans are available from Google. You would still have to buy the lenses, however.

I hate to throw in an advertisement of my own but the company I work for has also started an initiative to give away free VR Goggles. We got a bunch of them in our office that we've been playing with. Let's just say that other industries have taken a keen interest in VR technology hehe.
Unfournately it's still in development so can't say much about it.

I do remember a certain company I did consulting for had a bunch of oculus rift units to test/dev that type of stuff before Facebook bought oculus.

What is really interesting though is that we have a couple interactive videos that you can actually move your head around and view the video in from a POV perspective. It was really good and we are making more videos like it.

Why is your workplace only known as "The Company"

To protect the innocent minds out there. Besides it's a company that many people wouldn't even know anyways.

I remember very early on in the Oculus Rift's life, some Japanese people got their hands on them and did what creative Japanese people do best. >_>; The otaku wearing the unit looked like he was really enjoying the experience. e_e;
I doubt that that industry will take advantage of advanced (and expensive) units like the Rift, however. It would make a lot more sense to focus on Cardboard-grade units that make use of the ubiquity of smartphones. There already are companies that sell Cardboard-type headsets, except made from plastic, have a head strap and whatnot, but still much cheaper than a Rift. I think units like that will become quite common in the near future as devs take advantage of VR.
As for the OnePlus Cardboard, they said they sold out of their 30,000 units stock in less than 12 hours. That's kind of crazy.

I bet you asked for access to their site/servers to do "load testing."

They don't let me anywhere near their web servers but I do have the chance to create myself an @sex.com email address, not something I want to put on my business card though :whoops:
