Hello, fellow Milletians!
Currently, as faced with the grand crisis of lowered player population on all servers, I've been trying to come up with various solutions that would make Mabinogi a far more alluring, or perhaps interesting game for players to get hooked into. As for now, my plans are not to change any functionalities or critical game aspects (Skills, Combat Systems, Drop Rates, etc), but rather, to focus upon the easier to implement solutions that would be efficient and effective.
Why are people quitting Mabinogi?
- They've ran out of things to do, Mabinogi is now boring in terms of gameplay and grinding.
- Not enough goals or solutions for particular impossible walls.
- Lack of motivation due to the lack of social aspect within the game.
- There are better games out there to spend precious time upon instead of Mabinogi.
Why are new players not staying in Mabinogi?
- Difficult to catch up with end-game players.
- Lack of social interaction between new and older players.
- It is hard to comprehend on what to complete on Mabinogi. There are simply too many things to do.
- The economy is broken in many ways. It is difficult for a new player to reach the required gold count to purchase equipment for further usage.
From my point of view within Mabinogi, as a player that has been within the game ever since the start, the most important holding factor is the social aspect of the game. A system can be implemented to create a more open community within the game by creating a bridge to link both new and older players together. New players can rely on the older players to learn from the game, or gain important starting resources, while older players can make use of new players as a social aspect.
With this being said, let's begin by going through the various systems that could potentially be implemented into Mabinogi to promote a more socially acceptable and friendly behavior to create a friendlier environment for everyone.
The PEAR System
Peer Enhanced Assistance Regime
The PEAR is a system that groups new players along with a older, much more experienced community member. Much like marriage within Mabinogi, the PEAR aystem allows older players to come in contact with a new player and help them on various combat or social aspects of the game. During the duration of PEAR, the new player would be assisted by the same experienced player. There will be a minimum sign up limit of total level 2,500, thus players under 2,500 will now be considered as newbies/ transitional period.
PEAR is not an automatic sign-up system for players. Older players would have to request to be in within the PEAR system, and newer players can choose to opt themselves into the system for assistance. PEAR prevents trolling, or bullying via various aspects that is more or less sided towards the newer players too. The aspects that PEAR keeps track of is:
- Current reputation (Based upon PEAR feedback)
- Number of newbies helped
- Quest success clear rate
- Wealth shared
I will further explain each attribute in detail later on. As of now, just understand that PEAR is a system to help new players. It is not a system for old players to abuse upon and get points. The way how PEAR assigns new players to old players is based upon the above aspects and the allocated time slot system that notify people of what time are you free to access Mabinogi.
What does PEAR do?
PEAR will provide various implements to improve and promote assistance and social interactions:
- PEAR will have a note-message system that allows players to come in contact with each other even in the event of one being offline.
- PEAR will improve EXP gain for the older player by a reasonable limit. There will be no more difficultly restriction on the monster. Furthermore, if the newbie successfully complete a dungeon, a quest or any other simple PEAR quests, the older player will gain a token of appreciation for their help.
- PEAR will implement various quests for both older and newer players to achieve, much like what goes on in a dragon raid. This is to prevent the more experienced player from rampaging wildly within the easier instance.
- PEAR will also award points for any social interactions between the two players.
PEAR Quests
The quests PEAR provides will come into play after every 4 hours of online play. These quests will remain in the quest box for the next 12 hours, and then expires shortly afterwards. PEAR quests can only be completed either solo (By the beginner, if the veteran is offline or AFK), or along with the veteran player. Both players will recieve the quest at the same time, thus collaberation or coordination is easily achieved. At a single point of time, only one PEAR quest can exist within the quest list.
PEAR quests promotes players to assist each other in terms of gameplay. The newbie has to accomplish hunting or damaging, if they've chosen a combat class, or healing and crafting, if they've chosen a support role. In PEAR quests, the veteran is not allowed to use equipments (Fashion slot accessories excluded) and will be given a global set class weapon to use (This is a triple class weapon that depends on your current talents. You'll be given the options to set your quad class weapon for PEAR when signing up for the quest).
The possible weapon chart goes:
- Dagger, Sword (1H), Sword (2H), Blunt (1H), Blunt (2H), Lance and Knuckles
- Bow, Crossbow, Dual Guns, Shurikens
- Quad Elemental Wand (Ice, Fire, Lightning and Healing), Quad Elemental Staff
- Musical Instrument
- Alchemical Cylinder, Tower Cylinder
- Puppetry
For example, if I were to choose Archery, Magic and Bard as my talent, I will recieve a Magical Harp-Bow during PEAR that sets my damage values to the ones within the mission (A little like the last Shakesphere quests).
The new player needs to gain points to advance through the PEAR instance. From killing enemies, using particular skills, to healing, crafting equipment for the veteran to combat against special monsters and creating potions. PEAR quests speeds up the social and combat aspects of Mabinogi for new players.
What else does PEAR do?
PEAR also improves sociability by promoting the veteran to spend more time with the new player. PEAR provides token for interactions between the veteran and newbie based upon time spent within X radius of each other, combat, trading and communiciation. A good example would be something like the Doki Doki event, more focused on teaching, than having a relationship.
I am a veteran, so what does PEAR has for me?
PEAR provides various rewards for older players to achieve for. With the tokens they earn from PEAR, new fashion equipment, weapons, or cosmetic consumables will be available for trade. PEAR provides special event implements based upon one's reputation and capability. For example, someone with 50 good reputation points will have better tradable PEAR rewards than someone with 25 PEAR reputation points.
From Skill Training Seals, Hammers of Durability, and Training Potions, to rare single roll Reforges, Reforge level re-rolls, and even age potions and PONs. Veterans will have a good reason to achieve as much reputation as possible by helping out new players.
This is just a basic summary of how PEAR works. I'll be going into deeper details if people are interested in the system itself. All functionalities of PEAR can be easily coded into Mabinogi, and most of it is based off existing Mabinogi functions and quests.
PEAR isn't the only solution I have to fix Mabinogi. As this thread goes on, I'll reveal more plausible plans and paths that Mabinogi could take that are easily implementable within the game itself without creating a whole new engine altogether.
So, if you have any feedbacks, or if you think you have a pretty good idea brewing, why don't you add it into this thread so that we have a productive suggestion thread for NEXON NA/ KR to think about?
Cheers!

Introducing,
The ORANGE Project
Open Relationship And Negotiation Group Event
The ORANGE is an upgraded social-and-trade system within Mabinogi that enables players to engage in social and economical activities easily with more detailed informatics. ORANGE enables players to access and update their statuses through mobile and social platforms, and is currently already somewhat in place within KR Mabinogi.
What does the ORANGE do?
ORANGE enables players to not just announce the time that they are online and offline within Mabinogi itself, but also allows players to access their message inbox, and even reply to messages in real time. ORANGE also allows players to trade, sell and mail items to offline players (
Who, in turn, are then capable of accepting or declining the trade), and receive trade offers for various items while offline. In a way, ORANGE functions like the market section of Mabination. The purpose of ORANGE is to enable busy people to access or fulfil their Mabinogi social requirements even while offline. ORANGE also connects players who are offline to those who are not via the friend list messaging application. Players are able to communicate with players who are on Mobile, thus making simple event hosting a tad easier.
We can do all of these on a forum! Why should we use ORANGE?
Due to the fact that ORANGE works within the game itself means it would have a wider range of audience in comparison with the players that uses forums. A larger group of people basically means more contact potential, making ORANGE more effective upon getting your items sold, or your points across. ORANGE also enables the player to list an item up for sale on a particular official NEXON page, thus giving players the access to look through the player’s shop list within the game itself, getting rid of the hassle of searching through pages and pages of forum posts.
What else can be possible with the ORANGE?
Other than just socializing with friends and outright trading, ORANGE also provides an event calendar for the whole server. This means, if you are interested in hosting a server community event, you can actually apply for your event to be noted during the time period. It might cost a little NX to announce it officially on the ORANGE’s Server Calendar, but you will be given the rights within that day to host the event during the allocated time slot. ORANGE’s Server Calendar also gives people a simple idea of how long events are going to last, or how many days are events going to run for. Furthermore, the calendar also gives people the capability of choosing particular dates for special events, like in-game weddings, etc. The possibilities are limitless, use ORANGE to host your personal events today.
ORANGE Calendar works in 3 different methods:
- Personal Calendar, that announces your events to friends
- Guild Calendar, that announces your events to your guild
- Server-wide Calendar, that announces your event to everyone
ORANGE can also acts as a friend list wide announcement. Never do you need to ask every single one of the 200 people you have in your friend list that you need help for a Black Dragon Raid. Forget the days where you have to spend hours and hours to message and note every single offline friend that you are removing them because they are extremely inactive. ORANGE now does it for you, and even checks through if your friend is interested or not! How surprisingly convenient! Further added along with the fact that ORANGE can send messages to offline friends means you can actually get your friends online to do particular raids (
If they are interested, of course. They can set offline messaging to “Do not receive†if they do not wish to be disturbed) without even adding them on Skype and all!
Just imagine all the impossible things that we can only dream of doing when you get to access ORANGE!
Let ORANGE be a part of your life, let ORANGE be the vitamin C to supplement your diet of Mabinogi.

I think PEAR is too complex of a name, why not just call it the Peer system? No need to just add on words to it to make it an acronym (or a fruit).

I did, however, have a bunch o' ideas to improve Mabinogi on a various social and community aspects!
Behold, I bring to you...
The LEMON Concept
Long and Exhausting Marriage OpportuNities
The LEMON is a new style of marriage concept to prevent people from just changing their spouse as many times as they wish they could have. It is to promote players to stay together with their spouse for as long as possible, rewarding both players for understanding the benefits of a proper in-game long term relationship instead of jumping the gun and hoping that marriage works out well without proper planning. Enough with the puppy love in Mabinogi. If you truly love someone's digital pixels, it is time for you to invest valuable time for some quality experience together with your loved ones.
LEMON? What is that?
LEMON is a benefit and reward system that enhances gameplay experience for couples, or just people who would like to remain close partners with people who they trust. LEMON gives out reward tokens that can be exchanged for different clothing and fashion equipment, special weapons and partner skills. LEMON also gives the players a reason to stay together, or play together as husband and wife (Or husband and husband, or wife and wife... Or wolf and wolf, whatever, furverts). The longer you spend in a relationship with your loved ones, the more you benefits you reap. This includes creating an extended family tree, setting family colors, and more.
What benefits can I expect to stay hitched, instead of getting ditched?
For LEMON, the benefits of staying hitched would improves partner skills as such. There are 6 or more partner skills that can be implemented easily into Mabinogi, each of them can be used effectively in combat. Furthermore, LEMON also awards wedding tokens as per how long you remained hitched, how many wedding activities did you part take, and how much marriage events have you gone through. Due to the fact that a Mabinogi year is a single week, LEMON also awards different perks for every 4-years of unshakable resolution. These perks (Or buffs) will last an entire month, and only happens when the player comes close to his, or her partner.
LEMON Skills? Eh, how do they work?
LEMON partner skills are a special class of Mabinogi skill where you have to be within X meters beside your partner, and the two of you have to use the same skill within a set limit of time (Just think of it like how Fusion Bolt worked before it became a skill). When activated successfully, the player and partner will either execute a set buff for the entire party, or deal a high damage wide range AOE attack. LEMON partner skills are made specifically to promote player pairs to work and play together, or to join raids together. Unlike normal skills, LEMON partner skills only ranks up the longer one stays together with a particular partner. LEMON partner skills comes in 3 random flavours, all based upon how your honeymoon period has gone through.
The LEMON skills are:
- Everlasting Sweetness (Applicable for couples who has gone through a sugary relationship)
Everlasting Sweetness is a movement and attack/ casting-speed buff that affects the entire party for 5 to 15 minutes depending on the rank of the skill itself. The skill is stackable to everything else except for itself. The higher the rank of the skill, the stronger the buffs becomes, capping out at a maximum of 20% running speed and 15% faster attack/ casting speed at rank 1.
- Candy Hail (Applicable for couples who has gone through a sugary relationship)
Candy Hail is a wide range AOE and DOT skill that rains candy over a particular area of choice. This skill can only be used once every 1,800 seconds (It's just a flashy skill, really) and lasts around from 45 seconds to 3 minutes at a maximum. Not just does the skill slowly damages the enemy, it also drops enemy aggro (Much like R1 Raincasting). In fact, just think of it as a reskinned, baby-pink-and-candy-yellow rain cloud that drops candy over a selected area and deals a lot more damage than the occasional lightning bolt.
- Flames of Passion (Applicable for couples who has been through a more... SM sort-o'-relationship... I guess)
Flames of Passion is a DMG/ DEF buff that affects the entire party for 5 to 15 minutes depending on the rank of the skill itself. The skill is stackable to everything else except for itself. The higher the rank of the skill, the stronger the buffs becomes, capping out at a maximum of 20% additional DEF and 15% DMG boost at rank 1. Flames of Passion boosts DMG dealt and DMG received based upon the stated percentage.
- Spice Explosion (Applicable for couples who has been through a more... SM sort-o'-relationship... I guess)
Spice Explosion is a wide range AOE knockback and stun skill that causes a explosion of powdered red spice around the couple. This skill can only be used once every 1,800 seconds and does as much damage as Meteor Strike does. The skill furthers damages and stuns enemies for a short period of time and then disappears. Just imagine it as a Meteor Strike sized AOE and damage skill that does charge stun. The stun lasts a maximum of 5 to 15 seconds dependant on the rank of the skill.
- Ice Cold Breeze (Applicable for couples who hasn't been doing... Much... During their honeymoon period)
Ice Cold Breeze is a HP, Wounds, MP and SP regen buff that affects the entire party for 5 to 15 minutes depending on the rank of the skill itself. The skill is stackable to everything else except for itself. The higher the rank of the skill, the stronger the buffs becomes, capping out at a maximum of 7 HP/ Wounds per second and 5 MP/ SP per second at rank 1.
- Brain Freeze (Applicable for couples who hasn't been doing... Much... During their honeymoon period)
Brain Freeze is a wide range AOE and stun skill that causes a frozen particle effect around the couple that uses it. This skill can only be used once every 1,800 seconds and does decent damage over time based upon HP %, much like Poison and Dischord. The skill damages enemies for the entire duration and stuns enemies for the entire duration of the skill itself. Enemies damaged during the stunned period will take slightly reduced damage, from 50% damage received up to 75% damage based on the rank of the skill, and will not be able to be knocked back or moved. Just imagine this skill as a poisonous Ice spear that lasts from 30 seconds to 1 minute, dependant on the rank of the skill.
I am sure people are probably going to say stuffs like "Hey, these skills seems overpowered!", which is why I've left the damage values out. Obviously, these skills are going to be difficult to balance, but it gives people a reason to work through a long term relationship to reap in the rewards. The skills rank up once bi-weekly, meaning that you need at least 7.5 months before Rank 1 is actually achieved.
What other benefits can I get with LEMON?
If the above isn't a good reason for you to make use of Mabinogi's intricate relationship system, LEMON also enables players to purchase (Using LEMON tokens) various wedding apparels that are unobtainable via gachapon or events. From the traditional beautiful and elegant wedding suits and dresses, to new age, anime-ish, gothic lolita style wedding gear. Furthermore, you can also purchase wedding/ floral styled weapons skins to work with (They've done this for the FSN event) giving you a more unique, customizable Mabinogi lifestyle.
LEMON also enables couples to freely teleport to each other on the same basis as Continental Warp, a system that has been in place for a long time now. LEMON also enables the access of family trees and extended family trees, allowing the player to have a family emblem on the left side of their name (Something that looks like a secondary title, which ends up on the right side). Additionally, the family can select a family color to work with, allowing them to get their equipment and gear dyed specifically without much hassle (Of course, it being expensive, so dyes do not go out of credit).
LEMON tokens? What are they?
LEMON tokens is a reward based system that awards couple based activities with tokens. These tokens are awarded when partners complete a weekly couple quest, or spent some quality time together. The quest system works via the same basis as per the PEAR system.
All these benefits! What are the restrictions?
Of course, being beneficial to be married or to be stuck within a family, there are various restrictions that prevents blatant abuse of the system itself. You can only marry once a month at a maximum. You will not lose any LEMON tokens or LEMON token redeemed gear, but your LEMON partner skills will be reset. If you are in charge of a family tree, the entire tree will be demolished, and furthermore, all progress within a particular marriage will be lost. You can choose to combine families, but changing family colors requires a huge amount of LEMON tokens. Also, you can only change families (Even when the families are considered as one extended family) once a month. This is to prevent abuse of the dye-ing capabilities of the family colors function.
Of course, LEMON is nothing more than just a concept, a reward initiative to help players find the need to get together and find their very special partners. As per for now, all Mabinogi offers is a nice ring that never expires nor get damaged. I believe they can do a lot better than just that.

You know this is great and all but how is this any different than Nexon's own attempts to get veteran players to help new players?
Granted it's currently just a subsection of their forums with hand picked "veterans" to give assistance to newbies. So this system would be a lot more helpful and useful. However, considering how stubborn Nexon/Devcat is when it comes to this kind of thing, I don't trust that they would be able to handle this suggestion or it would fall onto deaf ears.
I've pretty much given up on Nexon, as they disappoint me each time I try and give them hope.
Especially as even smaller minor issues (looking at you lack of commas) has been ignored over and over again.
