  Then near the end of the game you learn that EXP truthfully means execution points. That must hit a lot of people who tried to be pacifist the whole way through but ended up killing.

  honestly I'm quite curious about this whole "earthbound" thing. I know that Toby Fox made a rom hack for earthbound, but how is Undertale inspired by it?

  Not sure if it's inspired by it per-say, but it does have a lot of the themes associated with it. And it was the first thing i thought of too, as well as others.

  There is nothing original anymore, there will always be new games with similarities to older ones, some more than others.
  
  Undertale reminded me of Earthbound at first too, and there are indeed a lot of similarities to it. It wouldn't surprise me if the developer has indeed played the Earthbound/Mother games and based their idea on it.
