    Probably some of them had the thought that she would give up mid-way if you attacked her to a certain HP, like some enemies do.

    ^Pretty much this. There is a game called Antichamber, which has mechanics so seemingly simple that people have trouble figuring them out, used to the way the most of games do things.

    Not to mention that Undertale, with all due respect, lays out it's rules rather poorly, at least early on.
