And I would play it for like at least 10 years.
But it was not meant to be.
I think I realized something was wrong with the game balance when alchemy was introduced and the golem WM was way out of line with everything else in-game so far. It made everything I had done in the game up till that point pointless.
If they kept up with that kind of power creep, then the game is most likely a mess now and no longer salvageable.
Though to be fair, it wasn't really even salvageable at that point (G8 or w/e, the alchemy update).
Just read a review on steam, by Trigger. He was ofcourse right on the money and it's really sad to see him go. He spent like thousands on the game so he must've loved the old game like most of us. The fundamental problems of the game is the director change I guess. When the game stopped making Nexon enough money, the original director went to develop new games.
I've been playing since G1 [back in G1-G3 this was basically one of the best MMOs if not the best MMO ever], but basically stopped having fun after G8 so I quit shortly after that.

If I had a dollar for everyone someone make a thread related with Mabi dying... I'd be a millionaire by now.
But anyway, if you ask me... I believe game is better than it was doing up to G8. The community is more tolerable compared to the older time. Mabinogi is still making LOT of money... More than it used to in G1 to G8, actually.
And oh, for your information, I have been playing since G2 in Ruairi server then Iria, elves, and giants came out along with Alexina server and I moved to there. Have been playing quite frequently to this day and I'm still buying Nexon cash. :)

Pretty much the above. The game might seem like its not, but its okay.
Esp. because the damn playerbase is filled with nutcases, and folks with good logic. There ain't many games like mabi, and it being stupid popular in JP/KR in comparison to NA is also a large factor. If for some reason it wasn't profitable, it'd be obvious.
Additionally, whilst KR still has a hateboner for letting NA have any freedom, and this has been the case since 2010~2011, Things have been getting a lot better. Patches are coming a lot swifter, and we're on or just behind JP most of the time. Most things I'd say good fucking luck to or as goddamn if nexon NA would get that...have actually gone through and happened.
3/4/08 official earliest character creation start point. I restarted my elf in 9/12 during that Great 3x AP event, and three and a half years later without going overboard haven't spent a dime of my own money, nearing 12k and 2000 AP from str/int/dex cap, 6000 from total cap. I have no space restrictions and minimal use of extra accounts for space(one for general stuff, alt fisher, the works, and another for girgashiy materials). Its entirely possible now, moreso than even when I restarted, to get into the game and play and hit bricks within a month.
Only bad news is when you get to that point the game is 90% over with in difficulty and that's the issue they need to address.
also, trigger lost faith in the game a long while back. By now I think if he was going the same direction Inabi was, he'd be capped, quit a year ago, and have nothing to really do, which I believe is the case. Inabi ended up getting banned/quit/whatever at 10~13k+ back in 2012. If he went at the same pace as he did until now, he would literally be the highest player in NA and I'd have zero doubts if anybody was over 30k total.

Oh my, welcome back to Nation after a whole year.
The game's state is pretty debatable. While it can be said to be "better than before" and more newbie friendly than it was when I started out in G2 and restarted in G8, the content the game flushes out currently is dissatisfying. I looked up Trigger's review and I do agree with all his points; the game's too deep in disrepair.

Sadly, they did. Disregarding the existence of reforges and pay2win crap, you have fast skills, massive stat inflation, and ridiculously overpowered skills. From skills that disable monsters to massive, massive,
massive damage on Warrior (prominently Final Hit and a new skill, Bash, that effectively replaces Smash in almost every angle) to Mages with almost all their drawbacks removed... 99% of Mabinogi's combat is just a joke.

perhaps the free weekly rbs causing an increased ap income would have a roll in all this?

So very much this.
Let me be blunt. You* can whine that Mabinogi is heading into direction you don't like, claiming it's going to get shut down because of it soon. But the game is doing well, especially in Korea. Another 10 years of power creep are ahead of us.
*It's just a figure of speech, not directed at anyone in particular.

- I find that some people on Ruairi think the game is dying based on the existence of shops in Dunbarton. To be fair, that's always been an accurate gauge of player activity... log in right after maint, it's almost empty, wait a day and it's full. However nowadays it looks relatively bare (as in, theres actual empty spots and the shops aren't overflowing out of the city).

... 'cause people moved to Belvast due to being able to sell more expensive things there (especially people with larger shop bags that can sell more total things), so the Belvast shops are higher in total number and people tend to sell more things per shop setup there.

- Of course, the game population HAS dropped in the past few months! ... partially 'cause school started, and we see this related drop every year. How many return when they get more free time is generally based on what content has been added to the game however, and new permanent gameplay content has not exactly been fast to come in the past few years.
If they want more people to return each year and more new players and better word to spread, they really need to add more permanent game content. The effort that's gone into some of these RP seasonal events and such could easily have been spent on more permanent areas and missions and towns and things to do in-game...

I don't think there is anything wrong with the power creep. I think if I have to point out something wrong, it is just it is newbie unfriendly, and it requires a lot of time for newbies to build up a character.
There has been a lack of actual game updates as well. The combat is pretty dull, but it is a really old game.
It maybe popular in Japan / Korea, but it never really got popular here. If you want to see a popular NA Nexon game, just look at Maplestory.

It means a higher percentage of your players are end game and can acquire gold easier than the majority of players on other servers?

I still say that Genesis was the single worst update the game ever got.
Changed the game from a slow paced one where you have to learn the enemy and react accordingly to even have a chance at beating a difficult dungeon to "well I can load counter for free if I screw up, so lets go rambo style".
That update didn't kill the game so I don't think there's much that can.

Personally, I have to say I prefer today's combat system to pre-Genesis. Even if you can load Counter instantly, you can still screw up whether due to latency or not paying attention to a specific enemy's patterns. Especially in mid-game SM's. While it's entirely possible to become OP, it's still something that requires a bit of work. As for instant-loading skills, I can only name a few that really could do without it.
...Whoever mentioned Bash though, I do agree with that. Dat chain damage, yo.

I dislike genesis mainly because it pretty much slammed and slowed ranged down severely to the point of nothing. AR spam was killed, doing a number on human ranged, and final shot got half of its entire point put to worthlessness (Not to mention people STILL say its garbage for no reason, its like these people have never used the skill). Not to mention crash shot as well going from a 1.5s load time to a 6s CD. The entire update ended up making ranged a horrid waiting game unless you mag spammed, and then that ended up getting creeped for damage over and over. The rest of the update is imo okay, it removed a good portion of the annoyances, while yes, making the game babbymode. Though there are several points that it became babbymode before that. Ranged being what it was and reforges for one. Making the game 'faster' in some regards did okay, and its a bit difficult to imagine post-fighter skillsets not made with 0s load time + CD system.
Bash+FH are just plain retarded at the moment. If devcat had in mind to put any other single target to near-obsolete, I'd be pressed to find a better way.
No, I'm not being salty because I can't use FH. I'm being salty because it shits on everything else except for red ghasts and field bosses with high HS ping. Read: not BD, not Duke, not Sephirot, not WD, not Girgashiy. Even the Alban Knight Golem you'd much rather go to red rather than blue/green. Its bad enough that every one of these bosses save for sephirot make using magic less worthwhile than melee.

Before, it was Rambo style WM+pet or just Puppet everything. Having a cooldown instead of a loading time on a lot of the combat skills made the game more fluid though. Genesis was actually a good update. Some stuff did got a huge nerf like Crash Shot and AR though. Not like range is relevant in damage anymore even if it didn't get nerfed.
The bad update is just the constant cash shop updates for ages.
