With the Wii console generating less revenue than in previous years, it's not surprising to see talk about the platform's successor. Speculation has ranged from a HD version of a Wii to one that includes 3D technology. At this point, Nintendo has remained unsurprisingly silent, slowly cranking up the hype machine with a comment here, a statement there.
The latest insight comes from Metroid co-creator Yoshio Sakamoto. Without providing specifics, he indicated that gamers will be in awe when the product finally hits the market.
"At Nintendo we always have the obligation to surprise users with a new game console," Sakamoto said in a recent interview. "We have never done what others have. We prefer to create something new that catches attention, and I think this will continue this time as well. Surely the new Nintendo machine will leave you all with your mouth open."
E3 2010 attendees were practically in that jaw-on-the-floor state after their hands-on experience with Nintendo's upcoming mobile platform, the 3DS. But will it change the mobile gaming market? That remains to be seen. Currently Apple is carving out a nice wedge, and Google's Android platform promises to steal its share as it matures. Sony is also beefing up its content delivery system for the PSP, and also supposedly plans to release a PSP-based phone in the near future.
Although the Nintendo Wii made its mark introducing gamers to motion controls, it wasn't exactly "jaw dropping." Not only will 3D and HD need to be a part of its next-gen formula, the company's "meaningful surprise" better be a whopper if the console isn't making an appearance for another three or so years.

Nintendo: 'Jaws Will Drop' With Next Console
The cat doesnt really have a good opinion of consoles, especially the wii
as the cat never really touched any of this generation.

IMO, this generation has been complete trash.
Here's to hoping that if Wii V2.0 keeps the motion controls, games won't be made for the sake of motion controls.

I won't be surprised if it involves augmented reality.

DS was a win in my opinion, now if only they would stop releasing a new version every year or so.

I got caught in the hype of the wii, and realize that later on that the wii games were majority nothing but crap. I hope to god they don't screw up the next generation/ version 2 of the Nintendo console to cater to only the casual and not the hardcore fan base.

Please go back to normal games. It's sad going to stores and seeing that 2/3 of wii games are Dora the Explorer, Barbie, I'm a pretty princess, I'm a mommy, and all that other garbage.
I highly doubt 10 years ago nintendo was constantly thinking about how they can change the gamming market, but rather, how they can make a gray cartridge come to life =/

I think I'll stick to my SNES and N64, still alive and kicking after 10 - 15 years of action. They just don't make them like they used to.

IMO Sony has the best games library available for the generation... again. Not complete trash. R&C: ToD and LBP are freaking amazing.

I hereby declare you awesome.
Console games these days are too easy. None of this Halo 3 reach/AIDS/wars/whatever will never be as entertaining and challenging as the games from back when they were made good.
Any idiot can beat Gears of War/etc., but how many can beat Contra? Or Ghosts & Goblins? the original Megaman games? Castlevania?
