Except when a game pisses you off to the point that you rage quit.
Then it's just not worth it, and you end up hating the game.
That's only if you haven't given yourself enough time to understand how the game works. Often with many of the older pre-N64 games, beating it required some knowledge of how to get through the level/boss/whatever without dying too often. As long as you knew how to handle each level/boss, beating the game never really was that difficult.
The problem with games now is that they are often way too easy to complete and aren't as challenging because the game developers are trying to widen their audience by making their games more accessable to newcomers. And some developers (mostly MMO devs) have taken the extra step to piss off core gamers by catering to weaker players with premium cash shop items that boost their abilities to the point that it breaks the game. Anyone who's played S4 League recently with all the AP hoaring players running rampant will probably understand what I'm talking about.
Now all of this doesn't necessarily mean those games aren't fun, they're just not as challenging/balanced as the older games were. I don't have any problem playing any of the newer games as they can be as fun as the older games. It all really boils down to personal tastes and I guess I'm a little more open to some off the newer games, though I still love playing the old retro games.
As for the next big Nintendo console, I'm really excited to see what they pull off their bag of tricks this time. Hopefully more game developers will take them more seriously since the Wii is kind of an under-rated system that a lot of game devs have ignored.
