K, I used to play this game when I was about 16. Since then, I've gone to college and gotten into all kinds of things (nothing bad, mostly). I tried playing this game about a year or so ago, but I got locked out of my old account with my pet Thunder Dragon and ragequit, but I think I'm mature enough, and have calmed down enough, to move on from that and give this game another shot. Afterall, it's one of the best MMOs I've ever played, despite its flaws.
Right now, I'm kind of torn between which race to play as: The sexy and cool-looking but range-handicapped Giant who can wield a lance and shield, or the cute, stick-figured, arrow-slinging Human who can't use a shield with a lance. I guess the deciding factor for me there is: Do I care more about archery, or lance-play?
As of late, I've been working with a friend of mine at my college to start a gaming organization centered around e-sports, and he wants to make it into a collegiate sport sort of thing, real big. Hopefully between schoolwork, journalism work, and helping to run an organization, I'll find time to dive back into this game.

Archery is dead.

There are many issues with archery.
And Giants do look better.
Go Giant.

Archery's a mixed bag. It only truly shines when you have all the essential tools for it maxed out (dexterity, weapon, enchant, reforge, etc.). However, any other weapon class doesn't need much to plow through things. While there was an update for Archery a year back, they literally got nothing that helps their standing compared to the overwhelming buffs the standard Close Combat and Magic received.
Giant Lancers are now surpassed by Close Combat Humans with their massive damage boosts, but nonetheless Giant Lancers are still viable.

I don't think think Archery or Shields with Lances should be the main thing you look at, though do what you think is right regardless of what I say. But if you ask me, you should be looking at stats primarily, and skill multipliers as the secondary secondary. A good place to start would be to check the wiki's pages for Giants, Human, Character, and Stats and Skills. Those pages will show you how much stats are available to certain races, in addition to how much stats each race gets as it levels, which isn't as important but shouldn't be ignored either.
You're not missing out too much by not having a shield with a lance equipped. On the other hand, a Guard Cylinder with a Lance equipped? I don't know, I've never played a giant with that setup so I'm not sure if alchemy actually is that important of a factor when focusing on lances

Oh, wow. If Archery's really that bad, yeah, I'm gonna go Giant.
Boy! I hope I have time to play this game this semester! Probably not, but I might as well try!

Well, archery isn't "that bad", but most people aren't willing to put the resources required to make archery worth it.
That being said, if you want to get the most cost efficient and quick spiking route, dual wield human is the way to go.

Yuck. For some reason, I never liked dual-wielding in any game I play. It just feels...redundant. Besides, I don't really care about taking the easiest route.
But is Archery really that expensive?
-
Qnjo wrote on 2016-02-15 11:19
Indeed. From what I heard, making archery "not bad" requires an expensive weapon, enchants and reforges - all close to max roll. Not even mentioning near capped dexterity, additional ways of buffing yourself further are much needed. We're looking at millions upon millions of gold and quite a bit of time spent on grinding.
And then you can miss your arrows...

I have to agree. Since G16 I've been waiting on devcat to make elves better, because they can't be that far gone and must have that intention eventually. *Waits for rebalances* Ohh okay, more str benefited stuff, but its fine cuz they said they're focusing on this now but will focus on races eventually. Oh guns? And they want elves to be the best at it you say? NOPE elves get shafted again. Oh a melee update. . . But its okay cuz a range update is com- nope that didn't help. "This update was for old skillsets we'll focus on races later." Haven't I heard that before.
All the while I've been playing an elf, waiting for an update, but also wanting to jump ship and switch races, but not because I already invested so much into it. Then I wait, trend holds, situation gets worse. It was at that point that I just jumped ship and finally created a human cuz they're gonna take another 8 years to fix elves. Then KR updated dungeons. They literally updated dungeons before elves.
Just don't go elf. . .

Right, to clarify the elf complaints to the newcomer, basically they're severely lacking in all areas; their so-called advantages in slightly higher dexterity, very very very slight adjustments to their archer skills, having more archer skills over humans, and some stuff to magic are all negligible over the other races. Their flaws stand out, with their lower strength and basically everything relying on strength, and their poor close combat skills.
Overall, elves are considerably inferior to humans and giants in every angle.

Human is the strongest race right now.
Pros:
Reliable archery (compared to elves), archery still can miss at 99% (only skill set that can actually miss).
Final hit makes close combat really powerfull and bashing skill with new dual words (its like a dps smash).
Puppeteer, ninja, gunslinger needs STR to increase dmg.
Almost all weapons and skills are aviable for human.
Fighter deals a bit less dmg than a giant.
Magic, bard, healing and alchemy are basically the same in all races.
Con:
Slow... they move so slow.
Giants
Pros:
They look sexy.
Highest def and prot in the game (usless in end game content).
Faster than human.
High Str. Puppets, guns, ninja
Higher dmg in fighter skill.
Higher Smash dmg.
Cons:
Low dex (no archery)
Extra mp for spells.
No play dead.
Not to many fashion options.
Elf
Pros:
They look pretty.
Faster than a giant.
A bit higher Mp pool.
Some extra archery skills also fire 2 arrows.
Cons:

Some of the Human pros should be in cons and you forgot Hide for Elves, but yea that sounds about right.
Elves have 14 more dex and 9 more int than humans (last I checked), but that's about it. Which is pretty negligable considering how much str, will, skill multipliers, etc you're trading in to get just that amount. (Not taking into account lvl up/age up stats, I haven't looked into that.)
