Firefighters watch as home burns to the ground
OBION COUNTY, Tenn. - Imagine your home catches fire but the local fire department won't respond, then watches it burn. That's exactly what happened to a local family tonight.
A local neighborhood is furious after firefighters watched as an Obion County, Tennessee, home burned to the ground.
The homeowner, Gene Cranick, said he offered to pay whatever it would take for firefighters to put out the flames, but was told it was too late. They wouldn't do anything to stop his house from burning.
Each year, Obion County residents must pay $75 if they want fire protection from the city of South Fulton. But the Cranicks did not pay.
The mayor said if homeowners don't pay, they're out of luck.
This fire went on for hours because garden hoses just wouldn't put it out. It wasn't until that fire spread to a neighbor's property, that anyone would respond.
Turns out, the neighbor had paid the fee.

Basically, most places roll the firefighter's pay into their taxes. For whatever reason this area decided to make it optional. While crude, that's just how it's gonna be...even if they volunteer they still need money for equipment.
The guy is has no right to be mad over this.
The town should really not give people this option as well...

Ohh so the town doesn't collect tax for firefighter upkeep, but instead make it an optional additional fee.
In that case, this is like not paying for insurance.

That makes no sense, didn't the homeowner offer to pay up front if they put the fire out? So essentially, the fire department is just trolling this guy and doesn't seem to be too concerned about the money.

If they did that no one would ever pay the fee. They'd just offer to pay in the event that their house caught fire.
The problems that present include a much higher fee than $75 since you have far fewer people buying in...it could potentially cost several thousand dollars just to save your lawn from burning.
That's one reason why I think they should just make it mandatory like everyone else.

Then why did the fire department go to the guy's house in the first place? If they didn't plan on putting out the fire under any circumstances, then why waste the gas and time to drive over?

LOL so they only put out the part of the fire that was on the property of the person who payed? What if the fire spread over there again? Did the fire department have the watch the fire until it went out naturally? Or did they just rush back and forth every time the fire got into the neighbor's yard?
