Update slower on new content and update faster for improvements on existing content.
Automated production is an example of improvement to existing content. Life before that was painful. The same can be done to other old content with problems as well.
One major thing that should be addressed is with the exploration and old dungeon systems. Shadow mission level-limits are a major obstacle for new and old players to party together. They need to do something about the old dungeon systems and improve on party quests (more of exp and less of gold - gold should be left to endchests only) because that is probably the only way new and old players are able to play together.
My main criticism of the exploration system is that everything of great benefit is of solo nature - which is terribly boring. Make some party-based exploration. There are existing but those are dungeon (you need to fight?) and the rewards, general and exploration exp benefits are really not as good and efficient as things like rafting and relic exploration - which are best done alone.
Also avoid introducing content that potentially upsets players by encouraging unpleasant player interactions - even if unintentional. A lot of things need to be more dummy-proof, bot-proof and glitcher-proof - just like how the whole randomised dungeon system is like.
A lot of examples:
1. Some things should be made optional content and not mandatory by giving permanent records/recognition for it. Especially these: Tara fashion contest - titles and journals, fashion contest botting problems, PVP journal, Royal Alchemist journal points, seal breaker journal points.
2. Exclusive overpowered items out of gachapon. Ancient/darkness china dragon helmet/gauntlet/boots on TW/CN servers. Enough said.
3. Book puzzle relics in Tara castle dungeons - it's fine to have them lying all over but it's quite annoying if this is the only method available because greedy people will be rushing for them and it upsets party play a lot - why not put them as possible secondary rewards off treasure chests as well so that people will need not worry about not being able to pick up book puzzles?
4. Rafting glitch. Fixing the boat/housing coupon glitch is not enough - do something about the Rafting Hobgoblins monster exp and gold/item drops! Remove them and compensate the exp at the stations instead.
This thread came timely as I was pondering about the direction of Mabinogi - with my thread over
here.
However, being not part of NA Mabi, I doubt this will get to them unless someone can be kind enough to get my concerns over there.
New contents may make retired players excited and urge them back to explore, but it is often very short-lived. Many players leave again after the first week. Doing something to retain players through better game design will be more beneficial in the long run.
One more thing I need to say is that Mabinogi probably needs a total level cap at some point of time to avoid exhausting the developers with demands for new updates from the over-powered players, so as to give them enough time to improve on existing contents, and also to allow new and lower-level players enough time to catch up to an even playing ground with the majority of other players. There are like 3 races for us to play so I don't see how over-powered players can't find something to do even with a level cap.
If they are more concerned that the majority of profits are from the power-hunger that players have to face (which the answer for them is paid rebirths), then the price they have to pay is with the quality of the game.
