Actually... from what an elf alchemist friend of my tested, balance is set. Or at least when he was running his tests on single charge water cannon. He said the balance was a constant 50% based on the numbers.
Water cannon is different. WC's balance is based almost entirely on distance to the target. For fire, wind, sand, etc, and other skills that have damage that is less fixed, your balance has a moderate effect.

Might want to mention Stiff Round Shields that can be found from SCC.

How rare are those? I'd like to drag people in there some time.

I've only found them twice. Once while solo spamming and another while group spamming. They seem to be the rarest thing though.

I'm going to be an alchemist now, so I was wondering some more things.
1) If I'm not an RA (so no access to RA enchants and stuff), would it be good to go for an all-crit set?
2) I'm getting a little confused about all this "what affects alchemy damage and what doesn't" talk, so um...just wanted to ask: do absolute damage enchants affect alchemy damage? Such as enchants that give +max damage etc.

Upity-date:
Information about Tower Cylinders will be added soon, though it will not contain full information until I can use it properly.
Updating on good equipment sets this weekend.
Attempting to add damage formulas within the next week or so.

What we meant back there, was that Crit, Dex and Will effect it, in Terms of how much of the time you are critting, and how high your balance is. Dex = Balance, Will and Luck = Crit.
Alchemical Damage enchants effect alchemy Damage, if it just says Max Damage +11 or somthing, that most likely isnt the enchant that would increase alchemy Damage, example; Water Drop Enchant : Water Alchemical Damage +5 Increase. That is an example of what a Alchemy Damage Enchant would look like. Enchants like Fearless/Polished, Elegant (Rank A Suffix, Difficult to Obtain) Aswell as Stiff Burning are some of the crit enchants you could be using.
Also, yes, work on Crit if your using WC/Heatbuster (With chain) etc etc, becuase the more often you crit, the better and faster your fights will go, and overall crit is the biggest thing a Alchemist Needs. Especially if you want to use Heat Buster, crit is a nessecity.

1- Yes. Critical gear is needed for alchemy, with damage being something of a side note. If you're planning long-run alchemy though, best bet is to get the Cress set in G13 and then put crit stuff all over it. Cress gives +15% damage to WC, Flame and Life Drain, essentially somewhat overpowering RA gear, while still allowing full choice of your own enchants.
I would also advise, in the interim, stiff tail cap and max +crit cylinders. Note, however, that Flame Burst does not require much critical. Like windmill, it ignores prot for crit chance.
2- Yes. At least as far as I know. However, I think they add to end-result damage while element-specific enchants give damage per charge.

Elemental damage is also affected by alchemy mastery.

Haha, I understand. If I had to choose between my Ranged Elf and Elfchemist.. I'd choose my Elfchemist, again and again and again. It's much easier for starting out.
Edit: Derp. I need to update the 'introduction' page. I'll try and find + add the damage formulas later and change around the formatting for the skills. Etc etc.
Motivation-san loves me today, ohoho.

Thank you.~ And that's true, though the nice thing about Alchemy is if you play your cards right, you can avoid getting hit at all. So it evens out. :P
