How fast do you read?

  Nice assumption that I'm still in school... As I'm not. I've graduated long ago, and this book was read simply because its the next book in the series, not that it was really all that great.
  
  When I speed read, I read important parts, skip parts that seem unimportant (Which with this book seemed to be most pages of all the chapters), and pay attention to dialogue. I mean, if you really want, I could even summarize the book for you, which I'm sure you'll tell me to do, because you seem like that kind of tool.
  
  Speed reading is reading, however if people speed read the whole book, without paying attention to certain areas, they're not going to get the book. And as I said, I could easily summarize the full book.

  And where's the fun in speed reading a book when the book is solely for your pleasure and not due to a certain deadline? If you have to skip so many parts because they are boring to you, then maybe the author isn't your type of cake.

  I'm only reading the full series because finished the first book, and wanted to know how he'll finish it. Books can still be good, even if they're slow... Just you want to kill the author. A thousand times over. With a spoon.
  
  The series by itself isn't bad, its just the slow progression. Its an oversized paperback, with 704 pages (Would be around 900+ if it were regular sized), and on every page there was at least one large paragraph that didn't really supply much to story progression.
  
  Its like reading Tolkien, or Tale of Two Cities, or any book written back when they were paid by word.
  
  Try reading a book, and picking out important words, important paragraphs, and the dialogue, and chances are you'll have much more than an outline of the book. It works better with slow progression books (Vampire Chronicles, Codex Alera, anything by Tolkien). Books by Piers Anthony, Mercedes Lackey, and Anne McCaffery (Other than her Hive series) would require more attention because they're less descriptive, and have faster progression.

  Actually, my science teacher says that in college they'll assign you to read a HUGE amount of text, and it'll be too aggrevating to read it all in a given night. He says to look for headings/highlighted words/etc. to look for the important information instead of having to read wall after wall of text

  You own your books in college, so they recommend that you highlight important parts for easy review.

  As for me, I'm CAPABLE of reading extremely fast, but I prefer to read slow. If I'm reading for fun (which is virtually never), I prefer to savor every word of the book and take my time reading it. I like to stretch it out so I can enjoy it more. That's actually a reason that I like anime over manga (off-topic but yeah). If I'm reading for school I need to read slowly because I need to absorb everything. If I just speed-read through a page I won't remember anything about it.

  It really depends on the book I'm reading... If its slow, I'm going to skim it, or if I've read it before. If its a new book, thats relatively fast pace, I'll read it slower, and thats only because I don't want to get through the book as quickly.
  
  I absorb the same amount when I speed as when I don't speed read, mostly because I'm so use to doing it the way I do.
