I know 3 types of anime.
1)Action
2)School Life
3)Action and School life.
are there any exceptions to this?

what do you mean?

I don't get it. Do you mean are there anime that don't fit into those groups?
If so yes. There are other types. I think those are just the mainstream.
One of my favorite anime shows is Aria. It doesn't fit into any of those.

Anime's plot falls under this, I've been noticing that pretty much all the more well known anime follows what I posted in the first post.
Basically I'm looking for something different

Yes. there are exceptions... in a way.
If the plot focuses on something other than those 3 topics, I believe they are valid candidates.

There are alot of anime that dont fall under those themes if you look. They're usually the more underated series too.
Gankutsuo, Steins;Gate, Umineko no Naku Koro Ni, & Monster are a few that come to mind. Though if you're not a fan of psychological themed anime you may not like those :/

I realized none of my examples had school in them at all xD
But if you want something that doesnt focus on school life, but has school in it, then Jigoku Shoujo is a good one. And if you dont mind manga, Uzumaki is another really good one. It's a horror series though D:

Well yeah, i figured lol. I like looking through lists of underrated series. Animenewsnetwork has a nifty "find similar anime" button. Whenever i find a series i really like i always click on it to see what other ones are like it c:

I'm just looking for a breath of fresh air from the school "comedies/dramas" or the mindless violence ones.
They can still be in the series, but I'm just generalizing.

A lot of slice of life anime aren't school based are by nature non action as well.
Aria
Chi's Sweet Home and Atarashi Ouchi
Haibane Renmei
Kappa no Kaikata
Skip Beat!
Are some of my favorites. Slice of Life are usually boring for most people so just be aware.

Gankutsuo is a kinda science fiction type, revenge themed anime. If you dont mind a bit of homoghei here and there, i recommend it.
I just started watching Steins;Gate, but it's another sci-fi type of series, but it's actually pretty funny. There's a thread for it somehwhere.
I havent seen Monster yet, but it's a psychological/mystery/thriller series. Dunno if there's alot of violence in it though. I doubt it.
There's a thread for Gosick somewhere too. It's a who-done-it ish series with minimal violence (usually off screen anyway) based in the 1920's of Europe.
Oh! Baccano is a really great series :D
It's hard to describe, but i think everyone needs to give it a shot if they havent already.
Ookiku Furikabutte (Big Windup) is technically based at a school, but it's about baseball so idk if that counts. It's pretty funny though

I think Baccano falls under "action" ... even if there are different elements involved it is still quite actiony

I guess, but i think you're meant to focus on the mystery of the story and how the plots intersect instead of the action.
