Minecraft is getting the adventure update, has a button more mods, think a lot more people have it, and has a lot more "depth" to it.
ahuehuehue
Terraria is pretty fun, but I feel like after you beat all the bosses and dungeons and stuff, and after you get all the gear, there's not much to do.
oyea Minecraft has a lot of custom maps too, so you could play those for a bit of adventure too.

Terraria is great, but lacks replay value.
Minecraft gets boring unless you enjoy making yourself an enormous mansion / castle / village / city / planet. Block by block.
I haven't checked on minecraft for a while (last time I played was probably half a year ago), but it lacks RPGy stuff for my taste (lack of materials, statistics), I know the game isn't supposed to be that way, but when I see a sandbox game like that, I can only imagine myself exploring dark ****holes and acquiring equipment :v
But there's mods that add more stuff, which add more replayability and fun.

I have both and Terraria seems to be a LOT more fun to me than Minecraft, but maybe that's because I've done everything there is to do in Minecraft and there's not much incentive to making more buildings because I've made like, 15.
But yeah, if you can, get both. They're great games and each one is a new experience.

well, my wal-mart money card needs a minimum of 20 dollars to be charged onto it, so technically i could get both. id rather not buy both and only play 1 of them though. the other 10 could go towards other things, like.....umm..... stuff.

Minecraft.
Terraria gets tedious after you get all the best gear there is to date.

Minecraft is more massive and has longer "grinding" periods for the stuff you want. Basically, better if you want to prolong the experience.
Terraria's good for getting down to the good stuff really quickly, and the dev team cranks out updates often with short waiting periods in-between.

I'd say Minecraft over Terraria. Minecraft's scope of possibility is just so much larger. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Terraria. But after you've been to Hell and back, killed Skeletron and raided the Dungeon, explored the Underground Jungle, and explored the Corruption, you reach a dead end. With Minecraft you can just keep building stuff.
And that's another thing. Building in Minecraft feels so much more rewarding, where as with Terraira I felt like I was only building because if I didn't the slimes wouldn't stop bothering me, and I'd have nowhere to put my stuff. Terraria used to have the element of adventuring over Minecraft, but, we'll see how much longer it does. Minecraft is getting the "Adventure Update" next.
But you can't go wrong with buying either... Terraria is like, what? 10 USD if I recall. Minecraft is appx. 21 USD right now. Neither is that expensive for either considering what you get in my opinion. I've yet to experience buyer's remorse with either...

Terraria Pro:
More equipment and items
Better monsters
Overal faster and stronger "fun" than minecraft.
Terraria Cons:
Overall easy and quick to get bored off.
Death is often choosen as the easy way out of trouble without any downfall other than losing half coins. Kinda beat the survival feel out of the game.
Minecraft Cons:
Much slower to grow inside the game
Monsters are harder to deal with
Minecraft Pro:
"Fun" can last a lot longuer on minecraft
Building oportunities are higher
Redstone~~~
Side: Modding comunity of minecraft is very active, you can always mod the game to fit your needs.

Minecraft definitely. Terraria didn't keep me interested very long.
Minecraft on the other hand I played for months and I still do play it.

I've never played Terraria, but I would HIGHLY recommend Minecraft, I've never been much for side scrollers (like terraria) Minecraft is a sandbox/survival game, you can play solo mode, or you can play on other peoples servers, but, if you haven't tried minecraft there is a way to play for free, some features of the game you won't receive, like adventure mode for example, I've never played adventure mode because I didn't buy the game. If you choose minecraft PM me and I'll send you a link to a server I play on.
EDIT: good choice.
