Gun possession

  I said: "Most violent crimes are committed outside the house". I was only saying that since most violent crimes committed were outside of the house from what I've read, people saying that homeowners were the ones that needed guns the most was false. You misinterpreted it to mean that most violent crimes committed outside the house used guns as the medium.

  How is that little kid going to cut somebody's head off if he/she can't even reach it? The angle of cutting and strength used matters too.

  You can solve being a victim of any crime outside the home by getting a concealed carry license. This doesn't mean you can brandish it or have it out but if you think your safety or others safety is in danger you are allowed to draw it.

  That's pretty much what leads to the dilemma I wrote about.
  If no one has guns, people are safe.
  If everyone has guns, people are safe.
  If some people have guns, people are not safe.
  It's impossible for no one to have guns, because criminals will always have them one way or another regardless of how much control there is.
  
  Safe being strictly for gun violence, the obvious accidents related to guns would probably be quite common.

  But, just to clarify the protection issue, since that does sound sort of funny...if someone is coming at you, be it at home or outside, with no gun (probably just a knife), then you can run or fight hand to hand. I don't think trying to fight off a knife would be to insanely difficult, especially if your adrenaline is going.
  Of course, this does hinge on no one having guns in the first place.

  If it was up to me, we wouldn't have guns in public in the first place. But now that we do, we're going to need to keep them. There would be a hell of a lot less criminals with guns if they were just kept for military purposes, much like there are no criminals wandering around with rocket launchers and flamethrowers. Obviously those are harder to make, but you get what I'm saying. The black market would struggle to keep up with the demand.

  it is extremely difficult to fight someone who has a knife, especially if you are unarmed yourself. And running only works if your fast enough to get away and you know the area your running in so you don't end up stuck in some dead end

  The attacker has the element of surprise, which would put you in a compromising position, especially when you have to wait for them to actually threaten you. I would also think it would be hard to react fast enough to retaliate and harder still if they think you have a gun.
  
  For homeowners, I would think an alarm system would be sufficient to scare away robbers.

  It would be hard to cut a squirming person with a bread knife, especially when it's used to cut bread by repeated slicing. The attacker would have a better chance killing a victim by stabbing, and even then it's difficult to hit the vitals without the proper strength and aim.

  Well to be fair, a quick bullet to the head is most likely the far preferable alternative to bleeding out from a painful arrow wound.

  Osayidan has the right idea. If you lack a weapon you are at the mercy of your attacker. It is incredibly difficult to parry and disarm an attacker even if they're only wielding a knife. It's even harder if they're carrying a firearm. You're forced to hide or flee while they steal your crap or if you're caught somehow close the distance and deliver blunt force to their head.
  
  In almost any attack, simply showing that you have a weapon is enough to disuade your attacker from even trying to fight back. Most robbers find it better to flee that home and rob someone that's unarmed.
  
  If you live alone, keep a sidearm near your bed. If you have kids, keep it locked up in a gun cabinet in your bedroom. If you live in an area with a high crime rate secure all windows and doors. Don't just let someone kill you or your family.
  
  Trust me -if firearms were illegal- criminals would get their hands on them...and then you would have no way to protect yourself. I sure as hell don't want to have to depend on the police for my protection.
