I agree with you, though, it irks me that people assume that I just swallow whatever I'm spoonfed. There are some religious people that have done their homework.
Oh, I understand that. What I'm saying is that there is a fundamental flaw with accepting anything you're told about the metaphysical. Again, my opinion, but as I see it the only belief you should have is one you create yourself. Acknowledging the beliefs of others and using them to review your own is one thing, but it is another to follow a religion. What I'm trying to say, I suppose, is that metaphysical beliefs should be founded purely on reason.
As mentioned earlier here, I do have spiritual beliefs-- though atheisitc, I reasoned a variety of concepts against things that I knew and/or accepted about life and the universe. I get called often on my dislike for "faith" when people claim that my beliefs constitute faith. They don't.
I have no faith in my beliefs whatsoever. For one thing, I know that it's entirely possible I'm nowhere near right. Given all the possibilities, in fact, I'm almost certainly wrong. For another, if I come to know something or am given a rational argument which would disprove what I believe or make it illogical to me, there is no making excuses for it, it must be fully torn apart and rebuilt anew in a way that fits with the new information.
