  It's because Megaupload had a huge conflict with Universal Music Group. That's why they're being targetted first.

  And no, they won't use it reasonably. If they've already done this without much power, what are they gonna do with more power? They have a history of abusing all the power they have and even stretching it to abuse some of it they don't have. By the time they admit they broke their rules, so many years have passed (often decades) that nothing can be done about it anymore.

  
  
  The fact that SOPA wasn't needed for this should be more reason for people to not freak out over SOPA. They did this without SOPA because the Megaupload guys have committed crimes and NZ has an extradition treaty with the US. SOPA would help in situations where the US Justice Department lacks the tools to pursue justice. They've been charged with racketeering and money laundering in addition to the copyright stuff. We'll see if the charges are upheld in court, but at this point it looks like these guys have been all-round crooks besides hosting MegaUpload, which is pretty shady in itself given the details surfacing about it.

  If what you say is correct, and they DON"T need SOPA/PIPA to sue such people, why are they supporting it and throwing hundreds of dollars in the way of the people that do support it? Wouldn't that be a waste of money? And don't corporations and big companies horde all their money? What? You're obviously not getting the big picture. Get what I'm saying, Steam was made in order to win over pirates, and it did, just how EA Origin is trying to do, although it could be a lot better but w/e.
  
  They shut down one site because of copy infringement that THEY THEMSELVES did not upload. This is saying, that IF you live in the New York State, and you do something wrong against someone else, that the NEW YORK STATE is LIABLE for your actions.
  
  Let's go to a more extreme case, since this is the internet we are talking about, GLOBAL AND WORLD WIDE NETWORK. A resident in the USA, uploads a video of a Protest in China against their government, and CHINA steps in and ARRESTS a USA CITIZEN because THAT video is of CHINA PROPERTY.
  
  EDIT: I am really curious what you think about this bill, and I would like to make a point about one of my favorite people for games, the CEO and founder of STEAM. He himself said piracy is a service problem, and it IS, that is why so many people go to steam and not piratebay. WHY? Because they can pay games for a low price and NOT be downloading possible viruses using piratebay.

  Simple. Treaties and laws are not the same with every country. NZ just so happens to be one with an agreement with the US. MU also had operations within the US. The same cannot be said about sites like piratebay, which the US cannot take down with current law.
  
  I'm not a huge fan of the bills, but at the same time I recognize the fact that they are trying to address a serious issue. The fact of the matter is that technology has progressed too fast compared to law, and therefore we have this mess right now. It should not be so easy to steal online and get away with it. Nor should people feel entitled to the ability to pirate stuff. Law will eventually catch up, or make progress on it at the very least.
