Mew I think you don't understand how a Nen Master is played, which is why you're not having a total blast with it.
Nen Masters are very strategic characters, much like Soul Benders. Placement and timing is very important, so running around and using your strongest skill like most other classes won't really work. You'll lose out on more than half your damage potential.
You need to know exactly what Electrocution does to know how to use a Nen.
Nen Cannon, Suplex Thunder, Energy Shield, and Tiger Flash all inflicts Electrocution on the opponent.
Electrocution only lasts a few seconds, so after your attack hits, you have very little to time to act. During electrocution status, for every hit that you take, you'll take an additional light element based secondary damage. This damage is calculated purely by the electrocution's affect (shown on the skill description), and your INT.
The damage ele deals is not HUGE, but it does spark off EVERY hit, with the same damage no matter what the hit. This means if you had x4 nen spirals up, and you ran past an electrocuted enemy using Tornado kick, you'd deal like triple damage.
x4 Nen Spirals + Tornado kick through a medium sized opponent = Approximately 11 hits, dealing moderate damage.
x4 Nen Spirals + Tornado kick through a medium sized opponent that is electrocuted = Approximately 11 hits plus an additional 11 electrocution damage, which can be well over three times the damage you normally dealt without electrocution.
I don't remember what build I gave you, but if it was a solo dps build, you probably had max Nen Shot, Suplex Thunder, and Energy Shield. Its to rip out as much electrocution as possible. I probably also maxed Nen Spiral, mostly because it provides extra damage buff towards Suplex Thunder and Energy Shield.
x4 Nen Spiral and Tornado kick is usually the most common technique against electrocuted enemies, but using Energy Shield or Raging Dragon on an electrocuted enemy also does the job well. So does x4 Nen Spiral and X spam, though it doesn't have as much AOE radius as Tornado Kick.
The other fantastic thing about electrocution is that they STACK. Sure, the affect doesn't last long, but it just means you don't have to worry about wasting a cool down on using an attack that can deal electrocution.
So the general gameplay is, avoid fighting in general until you stack up at least 3 nen spirals. You can spam Nen Cannon until then, since cool down on it is short. One of the reasons for avoiding fighting is to GROUP your opponents in a big ball. Cannon them all, electrocute them, and then DASH past them with your spirals and watch the numbers fly and their hp drop. It requires a bit of timing and placement, but the payoff is really good.
And then there are support nens. The skills Stimulating Breath, Khai, Solar Shield, and Nen Guard is probably your most useful skill, as you'll be in parties and expected to really help out from the side. Nen Cannons are still very effective as they deal solid damage and electrocute the opponents for your party members to wail on. You'd be surprised at how awesome the effects of a fully upgraded Stim Breath, Khai, and Solar Shield can be. Nen Guard can help your party be protected, or even give them time to set up special combos or attacks.
ANNND the PVP nens. Will probably forget about electrocution overall because its hard to really land good electrocution damage in pvp, and your nen spirals are capped to x2. But instead you replace these with Tiger Flash for speed and range on your X attacks, and Lion's Roar for wide aoe attack and stun. Your damage is lacking, but skills like Nen Guard and Dopples will really trap or bait your opponents well. You pretty much have to control your opponent's movements by tricking them into moving the way you want, or forcing them to move in a certain direction by laying down traps you never actually expected to hit.

Because of its huge range and aoe and low cool down, yes.
But Suplex Thunder and Energy Shield's electrocution damage is higher, so against single opponents its better to use these.

Nen shot top ava shouldn't be too expensive, so see if you can't go for that.
I don't know what weapon you're using, but double growler is really good, so maybe you should stick to that and upgrade it (+10?) for the +2 nen shot.
Don't worry too much about money and stick to trying to level up first. It won't turn into a "grind" until level 45, so you can start farming gold after that.

The double growler itself is just a purple level 30. Very cheap, shouldn't cost more than 200k.
+10 itself though...
I just ran a simulation and it came out to 4233600 gold.
3024000 second try.
864000 third try, flawless with no failures (minium cost).
7689600 gold the fourth try.

Upgrading is a *****.

the upgrade costs depend on the level and color of the equipment

The weapon type doesn't matter.
Rarity (white, blue, purple, pink) and level is the only thing that decides the upgrade cost.
Edit: Hahah I made it to level 13 and its damage peaked like +400.

Click on Kiri and pick the Reinforce button that appears. You'll then see a machine UI thing, that's the reinforcer. Get your equip(has to be at full dura) that you want to be upgraded and place it in the purple window of the UI. Note that it costs Gold and Ryan Cokes(Ryan Cokes are dependant on the upgrade number[Ex: +1 requires 1 Ryan Cokes, +2 requires 2 and so on] Gold costs depend on the rarity of the item and the level requirement that you need to wear it.) It'll tell you all the costs when you place the equip into the purple window, and it'll ask if you want to reinforce the item, or you can cancel. Click Ok, and wait for it to whirr and work it's magic. It'll tell you when you upgraded successfully or not, but it's a total b**** with success rates. If you upgraded successfully, then yay for you! If you didn't, you'll either see no change in it's upgrade, a downgrade, or the destruction of the item.
For visual effects, your weapon(only weapons) glows/flashes as you upgrade the item. Eventually, the glow/flash will change colors to blue or something.
