The 8 stamina consumption for just loading it is dumb since it directly conflicts with Doppelganger's damage, even by a small amount. Furthermore if the target dies in the middle of the attack, even on the first hit, the rest of the clones become useless.
When you start running around with 3k+ stamina, you'll start seeing those numbers. Piercing levels, critical damage from special upgrades, and ammunition bonuses also factor into the damage output.
Smash's damage output is irrelevant. Does Smash's damage make Assault Slash or Charge any less useful? Do you want every skill to turn into Final Hit or Lightning Rod?
Smash can be easily interrupted and it gives the target invulnerability frames. Doppelganger cannot be easily interrupted, it allows you to instantly teleport 1200 distance, it gives you invulnerability frames, it locks the target down, and it ignores the target's protection when calculating your critical hit rate.
A lot of skills are either far too strong or far too weak. Doppelganger is one of the few that manages to strike a good balance between the two.
