  Interesting to have more of the relationship between two characters out in the open. I had a suspicion it could be something like that. Man, that Pro Bending match was sad-face inducing, with the way things worked out for them, but the guys got what they deserved at least. It was cute seeing some Fire Ferret fans in the audience!
  
  We also got a bit more of that flashback. Boy is Aang pissed.
  
  Lin Bei Fong is a total badass. Just like her mom.

  Such a thing's not unprecedented. Remember, Iroh's method of dealing with lightning benders actually took inspiration from the movements and principles of water benders. Movements/principles that are traditionally from one school of bending can be applied to other schools, and can, in the case of Iroh, lead to new techniques entirely. Back then, he even hinted at how all four elemental styles of bending could benefit from studying each other.
  
  Even further still, there are several things that can be bent by benders with different elements. For instance, both Katara and Aang were capable of manipulating clouds. What I'm about to say next I'm not entirely sure if it happened, but I also recall Toph's issue when she started trying to metal bend, was that metal itself had properties of both earth and fire.
  
  And further still, the way in which metal bending has evolved is also very telling. Earth bending is traditionally very rigid and straight-laced. As you mentioned, the metal benders use their metal as hookshots and bindings, two things that in application have shown that modern metal bending turned out far more flexible than earth bending usually is. Lin's influence on the way in which metal is used seems to extend further than herself in this regard, especially when you consider Toph's humble beginnings with the new bending method.
  
  It might even be the case that while, from a story-telling aspect, Tenzen is there to teach Korra purely about Airbending, Lin might give her visual inspiration for how to tie all the elements together.

  To be honest, let's refer back to the first series
  the old guy who worked with Aang to unlock his chakras (forgot his name)
  remembered that he referenced to the pressure point on the forehead as the light chakra (basically where Amon places his thumb to keep the person from bending)
  which is basically "Illusion"
  he said it is an illusion that people are restricted to one form of bending, and can actually bend all four elements
  the taking away bending is an illusion as well, just locked away
  
  if this is true, then a spiritually strong Avatar will be able to resist the current Amon
