Gawd it's like each time something about Mabinogi II comes out everyone forgets what was previously said about Mabinogi II. That the gameplay will be different is old, old news. Their original statement was that the gamestyle/gameplay be "different from any other game" (sounds rather vague and boastful, different from any other Devcat game maybe :p). They said from the very beginning that the devcat team would be making a new engine from scratch (or so they claim) for Mabinogi II. Personally I'm somehwat frightened of how that'll turn out given the standard of work they've shown so far on the programming side. At the same time I'm hopeful that they'll take the opportunity to do a good job.

I've been thinking they quit on mabi2. We saw some stuff a couple years ago and then nothing until now (although this is supposedly also from 2 years ago so it doesn't reassure me).
There were actually some slideshows released at the end of last year which detailed a lot of the work being done on Mabinogi II. One was from a design/animation team detailing the sort of work that went into making a "bard" character (specifically, the sort of poses and movements that the character would do, inspirations etc) similar to the third slideshow hiccup posted and another on the programming side of it including a heavy focus on resource optimisation. Unfortunately my idea of keeping a record at the time was keeping the gameabout page open that linked to the two slideshows and a mistake with the browser was all it took to wipe that out. Whoops :s

So if Mabinogi 2 actually were to come out would they start like phasing out Mabinogi in favor of this new Mabi?
IIRC there was a statement at one point stating that they would be treated as two different games and Mabinogi would continue alongside Mabinogi II. Sadly I am terrible at keeping records (as I demonstrated above) so I don't have a source for that either.
I do have this to share though:

A lot of it is various effect work but skip ahead to 5:30 and you'll get to see the character models in action. Despite all the juvenile guffaws and such that come to mind at "Jiggle Vertex" it describes what it does fairly well. As shown with the horse video they've animated the effect of movement on bodies and the like. It's a bit uncanny valley for my liking but the attention to detail is neat.
EDIT:
A slideshow to accompany the video. Seems it'll be a pain to translate >_<

If anyone can read Korean and mind looking over this stuff to see if any of it is interesting, please do.

First one is talking about the bugs that turn up and how they're trying to handle it (apparently they had to build a custom handler or something). Second one talks about how they're trying to deal with the resource issues like loading times/sizes. Last one is fairly generic "stuff we did for animation".
[s]I wish I could share the slideshow about the "bard" though. It's probably the most interesting thing I've read in regards to Mabinogi II to date (the link is buried in the logs of the mworld chat room and it's so long ago that searching for it will be difficult :|) with the viewpoint of the animator/designer. Remarks like how they wanted to give the bard (with a lute in their hands) a stance akin to rockstar guitarists, fluid movements (emphasis on kicks being mixed in for their combat style) and the kind of finishing flair and finesse that ice skaters have. They "researched" various things (there was a slide with various Japanese PVC figurines in it, can't recall what for though) and certain staff members had to practise the movements themselves (you can see this in the slideshow hiccup posted) so the animators could get a feel for how it looked/flowed and such.[/s]
Found it!
So it turns out I was off on the date by quite a bit lol, would explain why I could never find it in my logs. There's various other slideshows though some of them are more text heavy than others. If I have time I'll explain some of them a bit if no one else does before.
There are many Nexon Developer Conference slideshows available and more than a few are to do with Mabinogi 2 but overwhelmingly they're all to do with design aspects and generally won't be interesting to most of us. System/engine architecture, optimisations, research/analyses, design choices and so forth are what they tend to deal with as opposed to actual game content.
