What does Lann have over Vella?

  From all the videos I've seen, there's nothing. Not even Gliding Fury, the Cross-Counter/Strike surpasses that easily. Even if you missed having it, you could always use the LLLLR to procure a weakened version.

  And he's male, for players who just can't bring themselves to play females (Like me)

  And all her smashes are powerful, so you could use either to attack depending on the situation.
  
  Meanwhile Pummel Storm spam is pretty much the only efficient attack.

  Basically, Lann has the option to stack lots of armor and def and just ram the enemy, rather than avoiding damage.

  Eh, when you can solo Elchulus in a reasonable time, I don't think she needs to anyway.
  
  Honestly, I think it's just the fact that Cross-Counter goes THROUGH the enemy, makes you invincible, chains into another attack that goes through and does immense damage that she's OP. And even her Slip is long enough to get out of the way if you're not that into calculating when you use Cross-Counter (Which is easy)

  Meh. People keep telling me spear lanns are end-game for damage, but I just don't see it when I'm dying while trying to ram raid bosses.

  Definitely. You press the jump key and smash.
  And if you do LR and hold down the smash, you'll automatically jump as well.
  I don't recommend doing the second method, since I always end up using Fury Infusion every time.

  Swords likely lose out a little in survivability and damage, but this is nothing new to characters. He was already losing to glitching Kais. Some weapons, like cestus, have been pretty bad from the start and still are to this day. Swords are still pretty good, they're just gaining competition and are now probably in the upper middle rather than near the top.
  
  So no, it's not balanced and it's never going to be balanced. But Spear Lanns still have the best DPS potential, more than glitched Kai being that he has Fury Infusion and can actually utilize attack speed. They're not for everyone and if you want to be at your best but don't want to play a lot (or spend money), you're probably better off with Vella or Kai. Not by much though, it's not necessarily worth remaking your character over.
