Need new headphones.

  The ATH M50 that teneshi mentions has some pretty rave reviews as one of the best headphones for their price.
  
  However, if you want a pair for under $40, I would recommend the RP-HTX7 from Panasonic. I purchased a pair for $23 while on holidays in NYC, since for some reason it's $80 in Australia. The sound quality is quite a big step up from the standard issue Apple earphones that come with an iPod - more solid bass and clearer in general. Comfort-wise pretty acceptable for their price, it doesn't get sore unless you're wearing for over 3 hours. The band is adjustable of course. Looks snazzy and hip enough for the indie kids.

  Sadly I broke mine from doing something kinda stupid (it's fairly solid to be chucked into a backpack and stuff no worries). Might rebuy if I dont buy M50s

  Would be true if it was still 90 dollars. Its 150 now. Though it looks like one store has it up for sale at 120.
  
  Anyways the problem with expensive electronics is their durability. I could buy a nice 40 dollar headphone but none that I've purchased around that price level have lived for more than a year of extensive use.
  
  Even coming from a poor guy like me, I'd say the extra money is well worth the investment. Studio headphones are most definitely not "portable" by any means, but they are tanks man. They're never gonna give you up or let you down.

  I'd personally suggest a Corsair Bengeance 1500 (USB) or if you need the 3.5, the 1300 is a good headset. They both have great sound quality and build quality for their price at ~$75, on par with a number of $100-200 headsets. Plus Corsair's customer service is hard to beat.

  The specs are great and I'm sure its a good product. I just don't think I'd be able to buy something like that without trying it out on my head. Oh, and by some unrelated bias, I absolutely make it a rule to avoid buying any product with these words in it "GAMING" which I am seeing plastered all over this product page. Going through various reviews many are saying "its good... for a gaming headset" which implies there are some short comings for the headphones had we assumed it was not intended for gaming. The most common complaint seems to be weak bass, the second most being early speaker blow out.
  
  Anyways, the USB thing is what breaks it for me. I need to quickly switch my headphones from various devices, primarily my keyboard, but I most definitely can't do that if I have to install a driver and solder on a usb port to every device I use.
  
  Edit: I know I'm nitpicking. I'm not saying its a bad product, I'm saying never order an expensive electronic equipment without trying it. Been stressing that a lot in this thread.

  The Corsair 1500 is the only USB headset that I know of that had "decent" audio quality; which is to say you'll get quality of a good $50-60 soundcard (i.e. better than you'll find on 99.9% of laptops and non-custom built PCs.) on it, you get virtual 7.1, and it has decent passive noise cancellation. The microphone on it is decent as well, and Corsair's customer service is very, very tough to beat. Heck they cover shipping fees under warranty and actually have Americans behind the customer service line. As for the foam pad, I've heard nothing but good reviews on comfort aside from the occasional "it fits tightly on the head" type replies, which mostly come from people who lack the common sense to expand the headband or have an abnormally large head.
  
  And the 1300 is the same headset with 3.5mm ports which means you lose out on the integrated sound card which is actually a very nice thing to have unless you'll be using this headset with a smartphone or a custom PC with a $100+ soundcard.
  
  As for "weak bass" it mostly comes to people who are A: not used to an equalizer for their tastes and complain when anything doesn't have "enhanced bass" or B: People who are used to car speakers and other 80mm+ drivers. The corsair set has 50mm drivers, and there is a limit to the amount of bass you can fit in something that fits on a person's head, and in headsets, that's generally 50mm. They're tuned for gaming but have a large potential for bass if you actually go into the settings.

  Not all braided nylon is the same, I would guess. But if done properly, then braided cords are indeed indestructible. I have some Sony MDR-Q55s, I think they're like 12 years old now. The padding on the headphones themselves has long been destroyed, but the cord itself is not going anywhere any time soon.
  
  But then again, I think it's double braided and seems far more durable than the Corsair's. It has the rubber wire core, with what looks like braided foil on top and then braided clear plastic thread on top of that. >_o
  
  I wish their newer headphones used the same type of wire. I imagine having it this durable wasn't good for business, so they stopped making it...

  People are recommending headsets? :V I thought it was obvious that headsets have terrible audio quality compared to headphones. It's better off buying a (good) headphones and buying your own mic (clip-on mic preferred), or if you want a good audiophile headset get the Beyerdynamic MMX 300, but don't get some headset thinking it'll be thinking they'll be better than headphones around the same price. Also for the bolded part that doesn't really matter since as I said before headsets have terrible audio quality compared to headphones around the same price.
  
  Also for the Panasonic RP-HTX7 it's an okay headphone. There's nothing that sticks out from them honestly. I was using those headphones while I using my Sony MDR-710LP headphones and I preferred the Sony ones which were priced around the same when I got them. Almost any $20+ headphone is better than the stock apple ones so that really isn't saying much.
  
  Also I'm going to suggest AKG K-240 headphones which regularly are priced around $100 but amazon now has them around $61
