My laptop was stolen but I got it back but they must have dropped it or something because it is broken all to hell, you can hear rattling inside and I've been wanting to build a desktop for a while now, I just haven't had the room for it.
I want new parts, I have plenty of used, but I want to buy everything fresh.
OS is included in the $700
Why $700? Well, my laptop was that much and it served me well, I want it around the same price.

What do you need to be able to do with your PC?

Gaming, it doesn't have to be anything super fancy, I'm just hoping to have it where I can play most games on medium-high settings like my laptop did

Uhm, does that include monitor, keyboard, mouse? For sound you already have a headset, right?

I have monitors and things like that, I have both headphones and speakers
for "no used hardware" I mostly meant things inside of the tower

you'll be able to do a lot more with $700 with a desktop than a laptop
I'm on my phone right now, so I can't link anything
however the best part of building a desktop is knowing you built it with the parts you picked out.
you'll need a cpu, motherboard, gpu, power supply, ram, and probably a case and dvd drive seeing as you're buying your os
don't play favorites either. there is literally no difference between intel and amd or amd and nvidia. get what you want to get
I feel like I'm forgetting something too
oh yeah you need a hard drive and make sure the mobo socket is the same as the cpu

You didn't include the OS.
This one has lower specs on the graphics and a cheapass tower, but it includes Windows 7.

are the two red tiered builds worth it if you dont care about running anything at max settings
note all 5 tiers are better than what im being forced to use now

Just out of personal interest, which speaker and headphone models exactly? Don't worry, I'm not gonna turn this into the n-th "BUY HI FI GEAR. IT'S GOOD FOR YOU." thread.

Um, are you positive the 650W power supply is needed? :P You could replace it for a cheaper 500+ one and take a slightly better graphics card instead perhaps.

650 is pretty standard and shouldn't give you such a huge savings compared to 500 as to allow for a much better card..
The graphics card demands 400W minimum. 650 gives a good headroom to add more devices like hard drives, additional cards or even a better graphics card.

If she doesn't plan on overclocking then 500W should be fine, right?
-
Osayidan wrote on 2013-04-02 00:50
If she knows for sure she will never add anything to the PC other than what's needed to run it as it is there, then 500W can work fine.
Start adding extra stuff like a better graphics card in the future, more storage, lots of USB-powered devices, and no.
